    Different things:

    1. The iPad’s screen is 1024×768.

    2. The iPad can play back 720p files on its own screen, scaling it to 1024×576 with black bars on the top and bottom, or it can show them in full glory on an external 720p+ screen.

    iTunes uses 960×540 if you use Advanced>Create iPad or Apple TV version.

    Low res video looks a lot better on an iPad than on a desktop or laptop computer, but with stills the OP may be pushing her luck for what she wants to do.

    DVCPRO50 would be the best choice for SD as it is at least 4:2:2, which will end up as 4:2:0 in the common profiles of H.264, and it can be either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9.

    Regular DVCPRO (DV25) is 4:1:1, which will end up being 4:1:0 when rendered to H.264 for iPad, so only 12.5% of the original color information will remain. There may be some chroma smoothing to ameliorate the result, but why cripple nice photos?

    4:3 or 16:9 is a matter of what is the most common aspect ratio for the photos.

    Make the project 720p to make things easy (DVCPRO HD is probably optimal in FCP5), and render to this size in H.264.

    For the love of God, don’t use DVCPRO NTSC (DV).

    DV has 4:1:1 color sampling, meaning 75% of the color is discarded, and the resolution sucks.

    Technically the Pad is 1024×768 with square pixels, but it does an amazing job showing 720p (1280×720).

    Try a clamp-on ferrite core on the Mac Pro’s power cord, at the Mac end.

    Radio Shack should have this, and most home theater stores too.

    Sounds like you have an open audio input on that Intensity Pro card picking up RFI.

    Just pull the plug on it, or turn down the audio input completely.

    Or do you have any additional audio I/O devices hooked up?

    As a producer and editor looking at a scary amount of hard drives used for media backup, I’m now forced to get up to date on the various data tape technologies.

    I’m hoping that the 1.6 TB (native) LTO-5 drives will be here soon with full reliability and true backwards R/W compatibility with LTO-4, but there is so much going on in this field, it is scary.

    Like John, I think that a dedicated Backup and Archive forum would generate quite substantial interest and traffic, as well as additional sponsors.

    There is a lot to talk about, from different types of drives and interfaces, different kinds of software support, autoloaders, etc., etc.

    I’ll be happy to share the best ways to handle off site media backup, as well as what I have learned from 7 years of using multi-generational online backup for non-media project files.

    I suspect the MXO2 in this case correctly guessed (or tested) that your source footage had pulldown, so it removed the skanky frames and and generated 480p23.98 on the fly and converted that to 720p23.98 at the output.

    The same thing can of course be done with software only.

    How much time did it take with the MXO2?

    (Processing time per second of source footage.)

    What are you using to determine whether the footage is interlaced?

    Not the canvas or viewer on your computer screen hopefully.

    If you are, read the FAQ section for this forum to see why that is not a useful idea.

    Are you looking at an external monitor hooked up to the MXO2’s monitor output?

    Seriously, I would trust those guys more than the FCS Spec.

    The next question is obviously how much this has been actually tested with real footage.

    We’re glad to see yo are prepared to bleed for us…

    That’s from combining the info in the [FCP7] “Supported Formats and I/O” section in Apple’s FCS Spec (linked in my earlier post) with the info in the ProRes White Paper.

    I look forward to hear about your findings with Alexa files, should be rockin’ if FCP can handle them.

    Yes, let’s all move to the gorgeous Post-WWII-Soviet architecture-like GUI of Windows!

    I think Apple is waiting for Intel’s Xeon successor to be available in volume.

    Mac Pro workstations don’t use i7 etc. consumer chips.
