January 16, 2009 at 5:33 pm in reply to: price drops on XH-A1?

Last November Canon announced the XH-A1S, an upgraded replacement for the XH-A1. A sales rep at Calumet told me Canon dropped the price of the XH-A1 in order to clear their exiting inventory. Canon’s press release for the new XH-A1S can be found at https://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20081105_xha1s_xhg1s.html

I recently purchased a RCA brand VHS/DVD recorder at WAL*MART for $168.00. Put in the VHS tape and a blank DVD and press the “Copy” button on the front panel. Done. No computer necessary. I have been using DVD-R disks and have not experienced any problems. I have over 70 VHS tapes to copy. For me this was the simplest, cheapest, and quickest solution.

    Jan,

Does the HVX200 use eproms (electrically programmable read only memory) or proms (programmable read only memory)? Proms are not re-programmable. Re-programming eproms in-camera may be difficult. If major upgrades or bug fixes are made to the firmware, Panasonic should offer a factory upgrade option to HVX200 owners, rather than forcing them to buy a newer model of the camera. The HVX200 is a first generation camera. There are bound to be problems and subsequent fixes.

    Mike,
Nikon camera firmware updates are available at “https://www.nikonpro.com/tech_updates.php.”
Scroll to the bottom of the page for D70 updates.

    Enjoy,

At the DV Expo in New York, I asked Jan, the Panasonic rep, the same question. She said no due to the cost of flash memory. I told Jan I have a $700 Nikon D70 still camera that has flash memory and have installed two firmware upgrades to date.

I agree with you not having the capability to do firmware upgrades is a serious flaw in video cameras.

As a PD-150 owner, I would recommend the Panasonic DVX-100A. It has much cleaner audio.
Regarding drop outs, buy the best professional grade tape you can afford. Stay away from the cheap consumer stuff. I’ve been using Sony DV-CAM tapes with my PD-150 and have never experienced a drop out problem.

It appears the spec uses JPEG 2000 as the compression algorithm. Am I correct?

July 26, 2005 at 12:46 am in reply to: P2 Cards Apple Laptop and fcp 5

This problem was brought up at Panasonic’s P2/HVX200 seminar last week at the DV Expo in New York. One person said they were able to solve the problem by installing a Unix driver for the laptop’s PCMCIA slot. Jan Critteden Livingston, the Panasonic rep, said the problem is an Apple issue and to contact Apple.

    Good luck.
