AudioSuite is in the Tools menu. It’s a little window that works like an effects mode for audio clips. There’s a drop-down menu where you can choose the “gain” effect. It takes a render.
Can Audition take .AAF or .OMFs?

Those are the Avid terms for it – they’re mapped to the “X” and “V” keys in Premiere’s “Avid Keys” setup, maybe you can work backwards from there. Good luck!

I remember FCP being super picky when it came to talking to Canon cameras via firewire.
Do what Dave said about your prefs, and also look at the firewire side of it:
* Make sure your cable is properly functioning – they can be fragile
* Make sure you are using a separate FW bus for the capture – no other FW devices (including drives) should be on the same bus.
* Have your camera connected and in VTR mode before you launch FCP. I believe the XL1s displays a “DV IN” icon in the viewfinder when it’s communicating through the FW port.Good luck!

I’m not sure how things work in Vegas, but I’m using Avid Keys in Premiere CC, and the “Extract” and “Splice-in” modes work exactly like how you’re describing – adding or lifting out footage while pushing the remaining footage forward or back as needed.
It’s probably going to break a lot of existing muscle memory you have from Vegas, but if you’re fully making the switch to Premiere, maybe watch a basic editing tutorial and try to do things the “Premiere Way”…
Don’t switch to FCPX because it “ripples well”. All NLE’s ripple fine, it’s a basic feature.

If your original footage is ProRes HQ, that’s as good as it will be (which is still very good).
Transcoding to uncompressed would be a waste of time and space.

Does the subject of your instructional video have some sort of logo?
You could fly (or zoom/wipe/any motion) the logo across the screen as a transition.

How large is your project file? I had some weird stuff go on down the stretch on a feature I worked on a few years ago.
Among other things, we broke the project into 20 minute chunks across a number of new projects. It seemed to take some of the stress off.
Even copying your entire show into a fresh project file (selecting the entire project and pasting into a new project) can drastically reduce the project file size. It’s one indication that something strange is going on.
