A shot in the dark – author the CD using Itunes or whatnot, then create a drive image of the CD using Disk Utility?

That’s spooky!
Seems like the problem is on Google’s end, rather than anything you’re doing. Especially since previous thumbs that were good have changed. Perhaps contact YouTube support?
Are you able to upload custom thumbnails? That could be a work-around. If you can’t currently, maybe ask Google to enable that on your account.

Export a reference movie from your timeline and then take the reference file into compressor.

I think you’re over-complicating it. You don’t need to do any tricks.
I’ve done a clean install of 10.8 and then installed FCS from the disks, no problem. Just be sure to run the FCS updates until no more are available.
FCS and FCPX should be able to coexist without any tricks. I’ve run FCS and Imovie at the same time, so…

I’m not in front of FCP right now, but could you nest all the sequences in one sequence, then export an edl of that, and get rid of the superfluous info, leaving the sequence names?
Beyond that, copy/pasting the 400 sequence names won’t take more than an hour or two. It’s unpleasant, but would probably be quicker than trying to find a way to automate it.
EDIT: – Another idea – if you can’t take the time to do the data entry, you could probably grab screenshots and use Amazon Mechanical Turk to have the work done.

It’s quite possible that you’ve got a bad firewire cable. They are pretty fragile, and the four-pin variety is pretty rare at this point.
Since you’ve tested a variety of applications and devices, the common thread is the cable. Try exchanging it.
Also, are there any other devices on your firewire bus? Take a look at About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Firewire. The idea is that the camera should be the only device on the firewire bus.
Good luck!

October 11, 2013 at 7:27 pm in reply to: Have you switched from Avid Media Composer to Adobe Premiere? Then you might be able to assist us.I still use Avid on a daily basis working on reality TV, but I’ve started using Premiere for other projects.
I found the Avid keyboard setting in Premiere, and it was pretty much smooth sailing from there, as far as basic editing goes. I set my keyboard to mimic the way I set my Avid keys, and I was able to get pretty close. One thing that was missing was the “tops and tails” keys that Avid has, but that’s not a big deal.
It was a music video, so editorially it was a lot of overwrite edits and some slipping. I didn’t do any lifts or insert edits. I didn’t need to find the “trim mode” equivalent in Premiere, so I can’t speak to how that works.
I remember a dialog box popping up the first time I did a four-point edit – it asked me what the default action should be, and I specified “ignore out point on source side” or something to that effect.
Aside from the mechanics of editing, I really loved that I could work with my RED footage natively and the keying tool was great.
In summary – I was able to pick up Premiere CC, having never used it, and cut a music video without having to refer to the manual or the forums for any help. My muscle memory from Avid served me well in Premiere on this project.
NB – this was cutting in picture over a locked audio track, so there was a fair bit of basic edit functionality that I did not require.

October 10, 2013 at 11:16 pm in reply to: Best and fastest way to create 25 different DVDs Using CompressorIf rendering time is an issue, you might want to look into enabling QMaster and getting clustered processing going in Compressor.
Or just let it crunch overnight/weekend.
