Create a black solid above your white layer and then apply the lens flare to this black solid. Then apply the “Shift Channels” effect and set it to take alpha from luminance (or also try taking it from red). Then apply the “Remove Color Matting” effect.

I think its probably just step one thats got you stumped, and it can be pretty hard to figure out. Heres what you do step by step for the stuff contained in step 1:
1. Create a new solid (he says to make it 30×30, but i think any size works)
2. Create 2 position keyframes. You should set them as far apart as you want the animation to last.
3. Select the 2 keyframes and then apply the wiggler, using the settings he shows.
4. Create a new solid the same size as your composition.
5. Use the pen tool to create a single mask point on this new solid.
6. Click on the position property of the original solid. This will select all the position keyframes on this solid. After applying the wiggler, there should be a lot of keyframes on it.
7. Copy the keyframes, and then paste them to the mask shape property of the2nd solid. This should create a nice curvey mask shape on that solid.
8. You can now delete the first solid, and proceed to step 2 of the tutorial. -
Try the “Posterize Time” filter.

If you look at the video beside of step 2, you see how he has animated it so that the fractal noise moves to the right, and just black is left? The fractal noise texture is what causes the text to animate, so as it moves away and the black area is left, the text that is under the black should appear as normal. Does that make sense?

Ah, I remember trying out that tutorial and I had the same result as you. Then I tried setting my project to 16-bit instead of 8-bit, and it magically worked 🙂
Try that and see if it helps. -
If you have completed 5 then your image should look like what it shown beside step 6, right?
I think all you need to do, is make a few duplicates of that, and change the color of each one (in the glow effect), and change the motion on each one so that they aren’t all moving exactly the same. -
I’m not sure I would try earning a degree online. You should really check to see if there is an art institute or something in your area if you really want a degree. If you are just interested in learning After Effects or something, then you might want to just pick up a video training series like Total Training. And from what I understand, having a degree in this industry doesnt really mean much. Your demo reel is much more important.
But you probably shouldn’t listen to much to me. I’ve never been to art school, so I dont even know what they teach, I’ve also never had a job with motion graphics. I’m just a motion graphics hobbiest for about 2 years now (video editing in general for about 4 years). But some of my friends who have gone to school for it often ask me how I manage to pull off certain tricks in my work 🙂

H.264 is part of the MPEG-4 standard, and has the best quality-to-size ratio of any video coding technology currently available. Developments in H.264 are rather new, and no encoders fully support it yet, though Nero Recode is the most advanced encoder currently available for this format.
I believe H.261 and H.263 were old standards designed for video conferencing or something, but are surpassed by most anything available today.
