Not sure if it would work or not, but you could try rendering out your source files (without motion) in draft quality, then apply your motion to these with best quality.
Or you could also try the mosaic filter. That does a pretty good job at giving your footage a pixelly look.

I would recommend exporting your projects in a lossless codec, and then do your xvid compression using a tool like virtualdub.

Nice tutorial. You can also add the “Wave Warp” effect with “smooth noise” selected as the wave type to add a sort of waviness to the image like the interference that is often seen over broadcast television. You can also animate the vertical value of the “Offset” effect to make the picture roll up and down like on some older tvs.

If you are just fading to black, what I always do is just insert a black solid on top of all my other layers and adjust the opacity on that.

Nope i don’t have any footage of “film junk”. I’m also hoping to avoid having to buy anything.

If you are working on a windows machine, you can easily remove the duplicate frames with AviSynth and the Decomb plugin.
This simple 2-line script would turn your 29.97fps footage to 23.976fps by removing the duplicate frames:
AviSource(“filename_here.avi”)
Decimate()If you need 24fps rather than 23.976 (23.976 is what DVD uses), then you can add the line:
