I tried looking at them a while back to see how they work, and it was totally over my head though :p But I think it does exactly what you are wanting.

Are you looking for a mathematical explaination about how it works, or merely a practical explaination about how it relates to video quality?

If you use avi, then I would suggest the lagarith codec: https://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
It gets excellent compression and even supports an alpha channel. It supports 8-bit RGB32 colorspace (the standard colorspace used by After Effects), although it does not support the 16-bit RGB colorspace.

Just judging from their past release schedules, it seems like a new version gets released every 1-2 years. 6.5 came out over a year ago now, so I would suspect that 7 should be just around the corner. I would be really surprised if 7 isn’t released at least by next January.
I’ve heard that 7 will feature GREATLY improved rotoscoping tools, as well as 3d text animation improvements, plus who-knows what else. Since Adobe recently acquired macromedia, it’s feasible that they could be trying to better integrate products like Flash, but I’m just taking a wild stab in the dark here. The more new features that they try to cram in, the longer it will take them to release it.If you have to make a decision on this, I would just say take a look at 6.5, and see if it offers what you need. I understand how you feel about having to make a decision like this, and you of course don’t want to purchase something only to have a new version come out a month later! I have personally never understood why companies like Adobe are so secretive about their products… it just seems like bad business sense to me. It seems like they would want people to know what they are bringing to the table, buildup plenty of anticipation and keep customers from jumping ship to a competing piece of software to get the features they need! But I didn’t take marketing in school, so heck, what do I know?

Ah, ok, that makes sense now.

Thanks! This will be very helpful.

July 16, 2005 at 9:00 pm in reply to: COW Tutorials: After Effects Deinterlace in After EffectsAlso not intending to offend anyone, I’d like to point out that there are completely free plugins for the free software avisynth that do even better job deinterlacing than those commercial deinterlacers, in my opinion. There must be around 20 different deinterlacing plugins that all use different methods, and the vast majority of them should produce better results than that obtained from this tutorial. Although I understand this might not be for everyone (I think Mac users might be out of luck, im not certain though).

July 15, 2005 at 8:16 pm in reply to: need draft quality visually, but best quality accurate positioningNot sure if it would work or not, but you could try rendering out your source files (without motion) in draft quality, then apply your motion to these with best quality.
Or you could also try the mosaic filter. That does a pretty good job at giving your footage a pixelly look.
