July 16, 2005 at 5:39 pmVery nice tute, Andrew, but the only comment I’d have to mention (in defense of Peter’s Reel Smart Deinterlacer) is that this method does *not* do the same thing as RS Deinterlacer. This method, like most, reduces the vertical resolution by half. RS Deinterlacer, as well as Nattress deinterlacer do not reduce the entire vertical resolution by half. Rather, they mask only the portions of the frame that have interlaced motion while keeping non-motion data untouched (user controlled).
The method in your tute is very good, but is more akin to AE’s built-in deinterlacer plugin as opposed to the likes of RS Deinterlacer and Nattress Deinterlacer. I just felt uncomfortable leaving this unsaid since there is a reason those plugins cost money!
I hope to not offend! I know creating these tutes takes a lot of time. I’ve never thought of using a method like this for deinterlacing… interesting read!!!

July 16, 2005 at 9:00 pmAlso not intending to offend anyone, I’d like to point out that there are completely free plugins for the free software avisynth that do even better job deinterlacing than those commercial deinterlacers, in my opinion. There must be around 20 different deinterlacing plugins that all use different methods, and the vast majority of them should produce better results than that obtained from this tutorial. Although I understand this might not be for everyone (I think Mac users might be out of luck, im not certain though).

July 18, 2005 at 5:43 pmI agree. I love that plug-in, I use it myself. What I meant was this technique is 1 result of using fieldskit to deinterlace by just blending the fields which is the most common way I use it. I know the reall plug-in has many great features like motion tolerance and way better (smarter) ways to deinterlace your footage to maintain the highest quality.
If I could suggest the best plug-in for deinterlacing go over to https://www.revisionfx.com/ and buy fieldskit. in fact they just released a new version with some great enhancements too!
When I was cutting out some of my “Ummmss” and “Uhhhs” and other rambling to shorted the tutorials, I didn’t realize the injustice I had created.
here is the original comment
https://www.VideoCopilot.net/originalI will try to get the tutorial revised back to my original.
Thanks,

Just glad you didn’t find I was attacking you or anything! =) I know creating voice-interactive tutes raise the pain-in-the-arse factor by 10X!!! The longest one I’ve done so far was an hour long and the editing was not fun.

Yes, Pete’s plugins are great (this is what I was referring to by RS Deinterlacer). I did a Cow review on Twixtor back in 2002 and integrated Fields Kit with it. Since we’re all on topic here, the review can be found here…

I wish Graeme Nattress’ FCP plugins worked in AE as he has some excellent algorithms too for field interpolation magic. His standards converter plugin is the best out there!

July 18, 2005 at 7:31 pmBy the way here are the settings the tutorials mimics.
https://www.videocopilot.net/fieldskit.jpgI know the technique isn’t ground breaking or anything like that, I just thought it was a cool way to demonstrate whats happening in some cases.
Btw thanks zarxrax for the link.
Seeya,
Andrew
