I’m trying to apply a blur to a piece of footage in AE 5.5 and would like it so that the blur affects what’s outside a specified shape, but not within it. I tried using a mask, but the blur applied both within and outside of it. I tried using a radial blur and messing with the parameters, but couldn’t get it to look right. Any suggestions on how to to do this wd be greatly appreciated.
    thanks!

Dup the layer, mask and apply the Gaussian blur to the top layer. M reveals the mask for the layer. Set the mask to Subtract, or check the Invert box. Chang Mask Shape, Feather the mask and expand contact, mask opacity, all keyframeable.

Use compound blur. Put the mask on a white solid. Precomp it so it rasterizes it. Then use that precomp as the compound blur map.

Thanks for this. Let me just make sure I understand. Dupe the layer. On the new duped layer (which is below the original), apply the mask where I want the blur to take effect. Then apply the blur effect to the original (not masked) layer.

Then I use “M” to reveal the mask (but what is “M?”–sorry), and set the mask to subtract or check invert. Is that right? And if you could let me know what M is–that’d be great.

    thanks-
