May 4, 2005 at 9:49 pmH.264 is part of the MPEG-4 standard, and has the best quality-to-size ratio of any video coding technology currently available. Developments in H.264 are rather new, and no encoders fully support it yet, though Nero Recode is the most advanced encoder currently available for this format.
I believe H.261 and H.263 were old standards designed for video conferencing or something, but are surpassed by most anything available today.
