I am interested in learning a 3d program to help accomplish some things that I am unable to do with After Effects. I have no interest in making 3d models, or logos and such. I am more interested in things like particle systems, making abstract designs, or making really cool animated backdrops. What would be a good 3D application for these purposes? And also, what would be the best resources for quickly learning to use that program?

if you’re a student they even have a free version for students
and the suite is pretty complete, you can do mostly anything

Well I was a Maya user for 3 years till I played with a Demo of Cinema 4D 9.1 last month. Blew me away. So elegantly designed. I love Maya, but according to your description, I think you would love C4D. I bought the full Studio Bundle of C4D and know how to use it in the last 2 weeks of owning it better than the 3 years I spent with Maya.

    Hey,

I don’t know JACK about 3d, and on the recommendation of many here I got a copy of Cinema 4D CE+ for $100, which is basically a full version of Cinema 4D XL v6 (at least, this is what I’ve been told). One of the best $100 I’ve ever spent!

They’re up to version 9 (which is what I believe Chris Smith is using) and a little out of my price range at the moment, but CE+ is so much fun, and there are hundreds of tutorials on the net for making all sorts of models and abstract things.

Finding it on their site is near impossible, but I’m sure a quick email will help you.

    Take care,

Alright, I’ll try looking into the CE+ version. That sounds like a great price!

OK, I am a C4D user and I am biased (and haven’t used most the others). The general vibe seems to be that C4D is the best option at this level. Relatively easy to learn and get into, great cross platform, fast rendering – important for motion graphics. Its perceived weaknesses, those areas where Maya scores such as advanced character animation, programibility, and specialised add ons for certain high end effects, are not really applicable to motion graphics.
Also possible to export renders to AE with seperate channels as an AE comp. If you are on the Mac your choices are more limited anyway (no XSI or studioMax)
