  • Any current AV amp would be HDCP compliant – but it shouldn’t apply here because you’re dealing with your own footage, there’s no copy protection to worry about.

Also, ensure the amp has a video passthrough, component or HDMI, so you can monitor pics in sync.

Must stress – not tried this, just conjecture.

    Eli

The short answer is that audio levels for broadcast, and audio levels for music playback/web playback are very different.

Over in the UK, we use PPM audio meters to judge audio levels. It’s a scale that was developed by the BBC originally to give an absolutely consistant and legal audio level for broadcast. Because it’s logorithmic in nature, it also flattens out the levels on the needles so that you can judge the dynamic range of a programme. Basically (and the reason I am telling you all this nonsense – as I don’t think PPMs are used everywhere else in the world, more’s the shame) the PPM scale goes from 1-6, with PPM4 being what 0db tone reads. Now, in an NLE like FCP, that tone recorded at unity via a Kona card comes into the system at -18db. My maximum ceiling for audio level for broadcast is PPM6, which reads as -12db on FCP. Getting all my dialogue and music levels between PPM4-5, with peaks at PPM6 makes my broadcasters happy.

Now this sort of translates to audio levels between -18 and -12db. It’s not exact, since PPMs are not linear like the audio meters in FCP, but it’s always got me through in situations where I can’t have PPMs in the system.

The reasons for the ceiling are many and varied – and not required for all applications – especially web delivery, and DVD transfers (where I usually find broadcast levels a bit low) but these are the requirements for broadcast equipment all over the world. Eventually your digital audio will meet the analogue world, and this 12db ‘buffer’ will be required to ensure nothing comes out distorted, and the programme doesn’t make you reach for the volume control on your TV. Like it does every time I watch a US movie on the TV.

Maybe this answers your query – probably not, but I thought I’d bang on about it anyway!

  • For other comments on the render ‘issue’ please see the long thread below about not using FCS2 due to software issues – you’ll spot it if you scroll down a little. Mostly it’s about FCP6 losing render files, and a workaround for it. Hope it helps you get your project finished.

  • Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the Intensity the HDMI in/out card? So the card allows audio/video playback and capture via HDMI.

Can’t you hook the card up to an A/V Amp with HDMI in? That way you can use the digital audio straight off the card.

Otherwise, you will have to bite the bullet and buy a professional capture card with professional audio in/outs. Both Kona and BM are recommended.

  • Ah, but you see in this case there is no ‘Apple bashing’ going on. This is not a “FCP sucks” thread. In fact, it was started by someone who is a committed FCP user – and who has had a problem with the upgrade. One that others have had as well. Although this problem has not yet affected me, the fact that Apple has acknowledged it means it IS an issue, and may be a reason for some people to wait. Professionals have every right to wait for systems to be as stable as they currently are. One broadcaster I work for still has a number of Media Composer 9 suites which are still in use because the new Nitris and Adrenaline suites are less reliable (and because they are cheapskates obviously).

I also don’t agree that FCS2 is a need-to upgrade for users who primarily make use of FCP only. Sure, Color is nice etc. and Motion 3 will be great when it’s stable, but for users with a standard workflow and edit needs, FCP6 offers no substantial new benefits if you work in DV, Uncompressed SD/HD and wish to continue doing so. I appreciate things have changed under the hood considerably, with multi-format timelines etc, but that’s of less benefit when FCP doesn’t work reliably.

Once again, I am a committed and passionate FCP user. This means I can have a discussion with other users about the faults and bugs of FCP – mostly so I can figure out what actually ARE bugs, and which are down to my own stupidity. I know many posts here on the Cow fall into the latter catagory, but some don’t – and for me, those are the worthwhile threads. Please, let’s not have every such thread overtaken with comments such as “well, Avids crash too, you know” or “FCP is the best NLE ever, and mine never crashes”. Often, they insult the intelligence of many Cow users.

Clearly, this is just my opinion.

I think you may be missing the point a little, even if this is all a bit of a storm in a teacup.

The thread is essentially about whether or not people should switch to using FCS2 in a commercial enviroment, especially if certain bugs cause workflow issues. Personally, I have had FCS2 forced on me through the purchase of new systems recently, with a need for new FCP licences – and we have not seen the render bug yet. Others have – certainly it seems to be more than one person, and so I believe this is an important thread for anyone considering the upgrade – even if none of it is conclusive.

I find myself a little weary of the way any thread pointing out any problems or issues in FCP is shot down on this forum. Let’s encourage an open discussion on all topics, whether they be pro or con – or how else can people have any faith that this forum is other than an Apple fansite. Obviously, this comment is not aimed at you, Wayne.

Happy to back up on X-Ray Dog. Our major client, a broadcaster with a blanket agreement for all commercially available music often uses them INSTEAD of film scores – really good.

    The answer is BOTH!

Project files are tiny, but vulnerable. Back them up regularly to a few locations. A USB stick is an ideal ‘last chance’ location, and may save you if your current project file corrupts or is lost.

July 30, 2007 at 1:12 pm in reply to: General Error 48

Interesting answer Neil. All that anyone seems to know for sure about it is that it points to corruption in the project file, render file or media.

Try a previous autosaved version of the project to see if the issue persists. Clear the existing render files for the sequence that will not render, and see if that clears it. Also, you could try rendering sections of the timeline to see if you can isolate the dodgy media file, but it sounds likely your issue is with the project or render files.

Hope that helps a bit – I have no idea why there is no Apple support letting us know what the error number means, but I guess it is OSX related, rather than FCP specific – maybe. Who knows…
