  • FCP 6 problems -Reatime results changing and render files??

So I recently upgraded to a quad 2.66 mac pro and started with 3gb ram. Installed Studio 2 and captured lots of 1080i footage natively. Everything was working fine for a long time. I’ve edited 40min with a fair bit of smooth cam effects. I left the RT settings as they were: Safe – Dynamic video quality – Full frame rate. When I would apply a smoothcam filter I would get a yellow line while it was processing, then the line would turn green, I would then render the clip and then then it would be blue and play fine. Recently I began experiencing lots of crashing and kernel panics. About this time I started to notice render files disappearing. It was also at this point that my RT effects seemed to change, now when I apply a smoothcam filter the render line turns red while it is processing. If I change the RT frame rate to dynamic, I’m back to getting a yellow ling during smoothcam processing. I also have a 2.33 imac with 3gb ram, copied my project to a FW800 sata drive and opened on the imac. On the imac I am experiencing the same render file disappearance, however the imac gets a yellow line when processing smooth cam, with playback frame rate set to full??? To make a long story short I replaced all my ram on the mac pro and am now running 5gb, and not experiencing crashes or kernel panics. But why did my realtime effects change. I’m wondering if something is tweaked on my motherboard?? In reality it really isn’t a problem, running the frame rate at dynamic doesn’t seem to make a difference, but the issue is really bugging me. Especialy because my lesser quality imac seems to be outperforming my fancy mac pro when it comes to RT. I reinstalled FCP but have not done a clean install of the OS. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Maybe I should be using totally different RT setting all together.

By the way the render file disappearance seems to mostly affect clips with the smoothcam filter. If a render a whole sequence, save, quit and reopen the project everything is still rendered. Then say I throw a lower 3rd on another clip, then render the red line on that clip, all of a sudden none of my smoothcam clips are rendered. I’m getting ready to throw my computer out the window. This project is due in a week and this render thin is driving me mad. I can’t wait to stare at the render progress bar for many hours over the next week.

    Thanks again for any suggestion.

For other comments on the render ‘issue’ please see the long thread below about not using FCS2 due to software issues – you’ll spot it if you scroll down a little. Mostly it’s about FCP6 losing render files, and a workaround for it. Hope it helps you get your project finished.

Yea sorry I should have noted I already read all the posts about render files. I threw it in because I wasn’t sure if it was related to my realtime effects. Thanks
