The isssue with small timecode has been raised before, and sorted with this:

As for the rest of the gui, well, some things can’t be changed, but you can make the keyframe editing ‘bigger’ by zooming the timeline. Using the bigger size for the tracks in the timeline options may help you as well.

We use both the Apple 23″ and Apple 30″ monitors – and I find no problems with the 30″ in terms of useability. Just don’t use too small a font in your browser (same as 23″ is fine) and the GUI is perfectly useable.
I prefer one 30″ monitor to two 23″ (ergonomically it’s better – and more than enough for the elegant FCP GUI) but if you already have a 23″, I would recommend just buying another one – it’s more than enough for the Canvas/Viewer/Timeline/Waveform/Mixer with the whole other one doing the browser if you want. And it’ll save you a bundle – and look nicer 😉

I have not had the render problem yet on our new FCS2 suites, but it’s probably just a workflow issue.
However, Motion 3 is easily the least stable piece of Apple software I have ever used. Had to get used to hitting save every time I changed a parameter.
And yes – I’m sure some of you have had no problems with it, but I have. On a brand new, clean system installed and tested by Promax, and totally stable with FCP6. But Motion…..

I was wondering if your autosave location was valid, especially if the settings were ported from another machine. I know it’s a long shot, but the folder still exists – you can browse to it?
Usually this kind of error suggests project corruption, or if it happens during opening, a corrupted media/render file. On autosave, it sounds more like a ‘trash prefs’ kind of error. I would suggest saving the project under another name, and seeing if you can open it ok whilst fcp is still running. If so, trash prefs and the issue may well disappear. Oh, and repair those permissions too!

What happens if you try to save manually? If that seems to work, check your autosave settings.
If it doesn’t work, you may an issue with the project, which may require reverting to a previous version. Let us know how you get on with the manual save.

eSATA – Just an external SATA array, which is the same type of array found in newer computers. It uses a faster Serial bus allowing for much more rapid data transfer. A newer and cheaper alternative to SCSI and fibre arrays, although without some of the capabilities and top speeds of the latter.
An eSATA array would suit you perfectly since your camera will connect to the Mac via Firewire, correct? You need an eSATA Expresscard adapter (such as the Sonnet one) to connect the array to the MacBook Pro.
Look for a Pro reseller, like Promax.com if you’re in the US for advise and sales, not a consumer reseller like Fry’s.

After many years experience of building and purchasing drive arrays, I would suggest NEVER building your own mobile array. Use a reputable external array from a media drive company like g-tech, lacie or sonnet.
What you get depends on what you need. Fundementally you have two choices, a firewire array (FW800 is faster if you have the option) or eSATA. An eSATA array has the capability of supporting higher bitrate material (including some HD codecs) but must be connected using an Expresscard eSATA adapter. They have two other advantages: 1) They operate independently of the FW bus so this is kept free for either a FW camera or deck and 2) The array can be easily transferred to a desktop system fitted with an eSATA card for ongoing HD/Uncompressed SD work. An eSATA array could be all you’ll ever need.
A FW800 array can cope with uncompressed 8-bit SD (and I have run 10-bit uncompressed PAL on a G-Raid). They are robust in the main, and you may even find slower ones that are bus powered, although generally these are too slow for good media capture, unless you want to work in DV.
Finally – look for ARRAYS, not drives – these are, by definition, a linked collection of more than one drive. This is important because in the most general sense, more drives = more speed of transfer. Most portable arrays like the g-raid use 2 drives. The 4 drives setups above this are generally much quicker.
I would suggest as a start that you look at http://www.g-technology.com – even if you don’t want one of their products, they sell the whole range, and also tell you for each type what kind of media capture/playback they support. You can then compare similar products from other companies once you know what will suit you.

I would also suggest you repair permissions. If neither of these work, try deleting the project render files as a more drastic measure.

Since no one else has invoked it this thread (although it’s been mentioned the other 2000 times this has been asked) the impending release of the IO-HD around the end of this month (ho ho – well sometime anyway) will enable you to capture COMPRESSED HD using the ‘visually lossless’ ProRes codec. This codec allows you to work on 1080i60 material at the kind of bitrates supported by SATA arrays which could be connected via expresscard to MBP.
All of this is well and good – but if you want to edit HD, you should still buy a MacPro, a decent capture card and an external HD video monitor. Editing HD on a MacBook Pro will be like trying to paint a Picasso with a crayon. In the dark. IMHO.
