I would think this has a lot to do with you having capture scratch folders INSIDER render folders. You have badly set capture scratch settings, and this has led to you deleting original media as well as render files.

As I’ve said every time this discussion appears:
1) I don’t believe for a second Apple has lost interest in Pro Apps. I see some instances recently (Aperture 3) where Pro Apps have been dumbed down – but then Aperture was never very successful, and had a troubled birth
2) Apple is a hardware company that owns 90% of the marketshare for computers (well, I think the stat was for laptops, but still…) costing over $1000. Pro machines.
3) Apple will NEVER sell FCS to a third party as it helps it sell its highest margin machines. They may sell more iPhones, but I’m sure they make plenty of bucks out of Mac Pros to justify relatively small pro apps teams.
If I ever read ANYTHING stating that the Pro division loses money, I’ll worry. Until then, relax – it’s been slow update cycle for a while because they owned the market. I suspect we may see the pace picked up a little as the competition improves.
All I want is that sweet, sweet CUDA acceleration in FCP promised for Premiere. Don’t let me down Apple…

G-Tech G-Raid (great value at 2Tb) – will also work with eSATA if you get an expresscard interface, but you won’t need it.
Also Caldigital VR are well rated (as well as ones mentioned by Shane).
Don’t buy Lacie or WD – they are not well built enough for laptop mobile use.
Personally – it’s hard to beat the price on G-Raids for pro use. If you’ve got the cash, get the g-raid mini which is bus-powered. With all G-Raids, get the 7200rpm ones. The G-drives are single drive – fine, but not as quick.

If this animation codec file was exported from AE or Motion (or similar) then request or re-render it in ProRes 4444 – assuming you have FCS3. This will carry the same quality and alpha channel, but will be smaller in file size, and play in realtime (green bar usually) in FCP. It’s the future!
AE can render out in this codec if you have it on a Mac with FCS3 installed…

Hi Anna.
My German is not good, but I think the answer to your question is “ProRes codec”. You can convert to this in quicktime player (QT7) – don’t use compressor unless you want to resize.
Otherwise, try posting your question in English, as most regular pros here speak that.

Sorry for delay in reply – been busy.
I would not assume there is an issue with the MBP until you have checked that you have the correct capture presets in FCP. If these are not set correctly (and I can see no indication in these posts that you know what they are) you will see NO picture in FCP on capture. You need to set the input in the preference pane, the up/down converter settings must be correct, and the capture preset must be exactly right.
Until you are clear on where the settings are, I would not rush to assume the SDI input is faulty.
Can you post all your capture settings, and Blackmagic preference settings?

Then I cannot help, except to say I have never had an issue capturing from a MBP via digibeta. Please double check you have the correct capture and playback settings in FCP – this is usually an incorrect preset issue – or you have a bad MBP.

Hi Scott. I use aluminium constructed cases in the UK with custom fitted inserts. Although Peli cases may appear to provide great protection, they actually tend to transfer shocks into vibration inside the cases, which may damage computer equipment, especially over time. Rigid cases with tight fitting compartments allow for little vibration and movement, passing shock straight through the case in effect, and reducing damage. This, as well as better wear and tear, is the reason that hire companies use aluminium rigid cases for most equipment.
I regularly ship Mac Pro systems as air freight to and from the US, and have never had any equipment damage. The only issue? This is not the lightest solution. But it is the safest.

I’d also add that the system I was using was on FCP 7.0. Out of interest, what version are you running – have you upgraded to 7.0.1 yet?

I’ve seen this. A reboot appeared to solve it – although I also subsequently trashed prefs just to be sure. The project was fine afterwards as far as I remember.
It does make for an amusing looking timeline…
