previewing in real time in FCP
Posted by Manny Rellesiva on March 15, 2010 at 2:32 pmIm using FCP 7 on snow leaopard. is there a way to preview a quicktime clip (encoded as ‘animation’) in realtime in FCP? everytime I would drag a QT clip there would always be red line at the top at it would say “unrendered..”. In Premiere Pro, you can preview it even when there’s a red line (which means it’s not rendered). My format is DV.is there any setting i have to adjust? thanks in advcne

March 15, 2010 at 2:36 pmDepending on your system and the resolution of the file you might not be able to play Animation back in RT. Your best bet is to double click on the file in the browser and see if it previews in the viewer.

You need to have a very fast system and media array to even attempt to play animation codec files in realtime.

March 15, 2010 at 3:02 pmI play them back unrendered in real time all the time, with alpha channel even, on my 3 year old old Mac Pro 2.0 ghz off internal sata drives (not system drive mind you). Working in DV sequence. Make sure you set your sequence rt settings to unlimited RT.

March 15, 2010 at 3:54 pmIf this animation codec file was exported from AE or Motion (or similar) then request or re-render it in ProRes 4444 – assuming you have FCS3. This will carry the same quality and alpha channel, but will be smaller in file size, and play in realtime (green bar usually) in FCP. It’s the future!
AE can render out in this codec if you have it on a Mac with FCS3 installed…

March 15, 2010 at 11:53 pmreally? but how can you explain the fact that same animation QT file would playback and preview in real time in Premiere Pro? I have both Premiere Pro and FCP installed in my Macbook pro. Would that mean FCP in less superior in performance?

Premiere Pro and FCP are different applications, with different capabilities. What one does well, the other not so well. Premiere can play back Animation…FCP can’t. I’m sure there’s something FCP can do that Premiere can’t…
