If the deck control is set to ‘non-controllable device’ FCP will ignore the incoming timecode. You need to set the deck-control tab to a setting where it is happy to accept the TC incoming – you may need to experiment to find one that works.
Hopefully, as long as FCP sees running TC (which it should on a basic deck-control setting like Sony VTR-A) it should still allow you to ‘Capture Now’. See if this helps.

The truth about NAB this year:
1) It’ll be too big again.
2) Everything you want to see will be scattered through around 14 halls. Full of radio transmission systems.
3) You won’t find half of them – despite memorising the map, and wandering around the Adobe stand 68 times muttering “turn left at Autodesk and it’s right…… damn.”
4) Despite promising your boss you’ll spend all four days finding all the hot new products, you’ll give up after 6 hours, and spend the rest of the time in the lounge bar at the Luxor/Mandalay/etc.
5) Apple’s stand will be bigger than Luxembourg. And packed. Unlike the Avid stand opposite.Wish I was going this year….. Have fun!

[Bob Flood] “Has this happened to you?”
Nope.
You’ll probably not find many people on a FCP forum who can help you who think FCP is ‘weird’.
To replace a shot, delete the transitions at each end first, then delete the original shot, then replace it with a new shot, then replace the transitions. If there is a shot change on the material that occurs during the transition’s duration, you will see a flash frame in the transition – the two smaller previews that appear in the canvas show the first and last frame of the clip, including the sections within the transitions (which are usually outside the in and out of the clip).
I hope this helps.

Not totally clear what you are trying to do to cause the error. Can you give more details – what effect applied to what?

April 19, 2006 at 11:38 pm in reply to: I need to capture a still image from my video for a newspaper write up at highest qualitySimple – Export using quick time conversion, select still image, and change the settings to whatever type of still you want to export. Check a) the advanced settings to make sure you have the highest quality settings for your still and b) you have the canvas selected so you export the still you expected.
FYI – Video stills bite for print press requirements. A video still at 300 or even 150dpi is the siz eof a postage stamp. I know it’s not a lot of use for this one, but I am always in the habit of taking digital stills on set now – even a compact digicam takes better stills than you’ll get off video – and the client is always extra grateful when you give them publicity shots for situations like this. Also useful for DVD cover artwork etc. Like I said, for the next one – not trying to be a smart….

In FCP 6, the Media Manager will work. Oh wait, no – that’s 7.0.
My bad.

I read during the intial furore around Boot Camp that the version of XP HAD to be labelled as SP2 – And specifically that you COULD NOT install an older, SP1 (if you will) version and then upgrade it. Perhaps you know more about this Pete? I read this a few weeks ago…
I realise that for many specialised software companies, Macs DO constitute a considerable portion of sales, but never the less XP has been officially blessed by Apple for installation on their computers within months of starting intel Mac production. Vista is only available in unstable developers releases, and STILL people have got in running relatively easily on Macs.
Just consider for a second that ALL the technical challenges are overcome, and virtualisation (rather than dual booting, which I accept has drawbacks) becomes the norm. I mean, no system, even the blessed OS X, is totally stable at any rate. Under those circumstances I believe that for smaller, more specialised companies, all bets are off for OS X development. That’s all I’m saying. Perhaps it’s fair to say that a lot of this depends on how popular Final Cut becomes, and whether or not a higher-end OSX only solution becomes the industry standard for editing, forcing developers to support the OS by default. You will note that already I am using the phrase “OS X development” rather than “Mac development”. The times they are a-changin’ etc.
BTW – First time I ever saw “Snooker” and “Interesting” in the same sentence, eh Pete? (I think our paths have crossed on the odd snooker tournament in the past).

You have word, itunes and iphoto open while you edit?
The point is that dual booting is a first step – virtualisation is already upon us, broadly transparent already. This negates any need to dual boot. Why bother to develop an OS X version if it’s a small part of your market, or even if it’s half your market? It has to save costs to go with the PC version, knowing Mac users can run it anyway.
Face it – the rules have changed, and the Mac software community is due some big changes.

Scott – Don’t save the project.
Either reload a recently saved version of the project (or use the Revert option in the File menu) or restore the project from a previously auto-saved version. You did have auto-save on, didn’t you? If the problem re-occurs, you may have an issue with corrupted media, a corrupted render file (which can be deleted) or corrupted preferences (ditto).
