I need to capture a still image from my video for a newspaper write up at highest quality
Hello, I am wondering what the best way to capture a still frame from my video piece would be that I could then take into photoshop. The viral video that I just produced for Cold Stone Creamery (www.coldstonecreamery.com/togo/) is being written about in a newspaper here in Phoenix. They want a still frame from the spot to run along with the story…but newsprint runs at 150 dpi and I am thinking that the video compression in FCP would only give me a 72dpi still frame. I can interpolate it in photoshop but can someone help me out with the best method for this process.

correction…I did not produce this video..I directed/shot/edited it. sorry. I know it’s stupid but I had to correct it.

Your still will never be any better than the default, uncompressed still formats that FCP can export: .tif, .tga, .pct or .png. Sorry, but it’s video. You should export the still from the highest resolution timeline that you have, I’d export it as a .tif to be more compatible, deinterlace it in Photoshop, then let the paper’s graphics people do whatever they need to with it. The odds are that they’re pretty good at upresing stills.

to further my question…what is the proper way of taking an image from the canvas and saving it out as a TIFF file…is there a shortcut or do I got file-export-???
I dont know the procedure.

Simple – Export using quick time conversion, select still image, and change the settings to whatever type of still you want to export. Check a) the advanced settings to make sure you have the highest quality settings for your still and b) you have the canvas selected so you export the still you expected.
FYI – Video stills bite for print press requirements. A video still at 300 or even 150dpi is the siz eof a postage stamp. I know it’s not a lot of use for this one, but I am always in the habit of taking digital stills on set now – even a compact digicam takes better stills than you’ll get off video – and the client is always extra grateful when you give them publicity shots for situations like this. Also useful for DVD cover artwork etc. Like I said, for the next one – not trying to be a smart….

Ben…thanks so much man…we actually already did the quicktime grab…I was hoping that there was a better way…it’s exactly as you said…the quality isn’t there. Especially for me since I am more known for being a photographer. I actually took some PR shots myself but that was after the shoot with strobes and more geared for Print/Editorial needs…I hoped that they would want those since they look freakin’ awesome and they are 100mb 300dpi files…but they didn’t..of course…
