    An added note to that work flow;
    If you add to each individual clip, TC will begin at 0 on each clip. If you add to a Nest, it will start the Nest at 0 and run through the whole Nest, not reseting to 0 for each clip.

    If you have P2 Log Pro, you can use that to “import” the files, then take all that XML stuff P2 Log creates and FCP will read that just fine. Unless the clips really are corrupted for some reason. One of the draw backs to tapeless, you’re suspetable to the same “data corruption” issues as all other computer equipment.

    But if you import with P2 Log, what it creates should be readable by FCP just fine.

    The HVX200 will only record to tape in regular DV mode, not in HD mode. Set it for regular NTSC-DV, set the FS-100 to regular NTSC-DV, record to both tape and the FS at the same time. Simple as that.

    You can’t do tape in any HD mode on the HVX.

    Export as their native format, DVCPRO-HD, Avid can read that. H.264 will compress the hell out of it. Going to any other format will re-compress the footage.

    Yes, you DO in fact have to name the RAID drives EXACTLY as they were originally names. FCP has nothing to do with corrupted files, nor with the operation of a RAID system. That guy was covering for his lack of knowledge. The version of FCP he claims was buggy, was not. The only P2 bug in FCP for P2 was in the P2 Import window, and nowhere else. Some people’s children…

    You can’t open “parts” of an FCP Project. Do you mean the Production is broken up into different FCP Project files? It’s the FCP Project file as a whole that gets updated. 5.0, 5.1, doesn’t matter if you’re coming from a 4.x version. Once opened, you have to jump through all sorts of XML export and import hoops to go back. In my experience, its not worth it, just finish up in 5. Re-rendering, let it run overnight to render everything. That’s the only thing you really have to do is re-render. And to me, that’s the least work of a project. Unless there are other details I’m not aware of. It would be nice to jump back, but in my experience, again, it takes WAY more time to go back, than to just re-render and move forward.

    May 7, 2007 at 3:39 pm in reply to: Offlining DVCPRO

    As someone who produces in DVCPRO-HD exclusively with the HVX200 and FS-100, I simply do not see any reason to offline DVCPRO-HD. I think it is a waste of time to even consider this practice. Leave it all in DVCPRO-HD format, there’s no extra strain on your system to edit, drives are cheap as all hell now. And HDV is a PITA to edit natively with.

    Personally, I feel that if you do this for a living, and do not have enough drive space for DVCPRO-HD file sizes, you’re very behind in the game and need to catch up as a professional. Not to be mean or harsh, but to be realistic.

    Stay in DVCPRO-HD format, forget off-lineing, it’s a royal PITA to deal with and absolutly not needed.

    Just my 2 cents…

    May 7, 2007 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Help! Need Final Cut Pro 4.0!

    Once opened in 5.1, the project has been updated and won’t open in 4.0 any longer. There are XML work arounds, but they’ll take at least as much time as re-rendering.

    Lesson is, never update mid-project. I’d recommend just finishing in 5.1, as any work going back to 4.0 will take even longer.

    Wait, you say “DVCPRO” tape for only $20. That’s not DVCPRO-HD tape, which runs $40 per 30 minutes, and a DVCPRO-HD deck that is double digit thousands, right? You’re just using regular DVCPRO tape and deck, down sampling HD to SD, right?
