Help! Need Final Cut Pro 4.0!
Posted by Eric Bradley on May 7, 2007 at 1:31 pmHi –
A buddy of mine upgraded to 5.1 mid-project. He is facing weeks of re-rendering and no longer has the install discs for 4.0. We’ve looked everywhere…new…used…can’t find it. Can anyone help? .dmg preferred.
Thanks

May 7, 2007 at 3:31 pmOnce opened in 5.1, the project has been updated and won’t open in 4.0 any longer. There are XML work arounds, but they’ll take at least as much time as re-rendering.
Lesson is, never update mid-project. I’d recommend just finishing in 5.1, as any work going back to 4.0 will take even longer.

May 7, 2007 at 5:39 pmThanks for your response. Does it matter that it is 5.0 instead of 5.1 which I originally wrote? Also, he didn’t open the entire project, only parts, and when doing so chose to preserve the original (or something like that)?

May 7, 2007 at 7:02 pmYou can’t open “parts” of an FCP Project. Do you mean the Production is broken up into different FCP Project files? It’s the FCP Project file as a whole that gets updated. 5.0, 5.1, doesn’t matter if you’re coming from a 4.x version. Once opened, you have to jump through all sorts of XML export and import hoops to go back. In my experience, its not worth it, just finish up in 5. Re-rendering, let it run overnight to render everything. That’s the only thing you really have to do is re-render. And to me, that’s the least work of a project. Unless there are other details I’m not aware of. It would be nice to jump back, but in my experience, again, it takes WAY more time to go back, than to just re-render and move forward.
