macOS 14.1.1 with FCPX 10.6.10 on both our M1 and Intel Macs runs just fine.

Very odd. Try this, when you switch, then immediately stop playback, what happens?

Are you using a different format of video?

Is this project timeline longer than most?

My initial feeling is that the cut is done, but FCPX is lagging and the GUI isn’t updating right away. Any other issues with playback? Are you using mouse or keyboard to cut angles?

If both channels have the same content, mute one, only use one as a mono channel. Why do dual mono?

OWC is a reliable brand. And depending on your needs, you could save a little money getting less expensive, slower drives. Our systems backup at 2am every night, they are all doing appended backups, and the longest they ever take is about 20 minutes. So speed means nothing to us, thus we got less expensive, slower drives for backups. Just something to keep in mind. Do you need fast backups, or does it matter? Speed costs.

ML and AI, though related, don’t really work exactly the same. But both are limited. They will each reach limits of learning (in today’s models). One theory holds they’ll eventually get worse because they start corrupting their own learning with redundant and garbage data eventually. But, it’s just a theory. I’ll stand very firmly by “too little too late” with Apple’s FCPX development. I’m using Resolve more and more, and really liking it.

And yes, they’re only giving us what others (and Apple had already done with legacy FCP) many years ago. I “think” the color thing may be that we can have clips take the color of the video roles, not just audio roles. I know Richard is ape-crazy over a scrolling timeline, but I’ve use a scrolling timeline in another NLE and didn’t like it. I had a harder time keeping visual track of my timeline elements. Timing precisely for compositing and effects I found to be more difficult. Hope it’s something we can turn off and on. Yes, Apple’s press release is super vague and makes me nervous. Why the need to be so vague?

Specify how you determine low end NLE from a professional NLE.

Feature films have been cut on every NLE, including FCPX Mac version. But the fact is the YouTube creator market is vastly larger than feature film or network television, and those folks are making tons of money and spending tons of money, and want tools that make their job easier. I want tools that make my job easier. Yes, FCPX development has slowed to a crawl. IMHO these updates are too little, 10 years too late. But man, that FCP Summit crowd, they’ll use any weird, twisted logic to justify Apple’s letting FCPX stagnate.

November 8, 2023 at 8:56 pm in reply to: iPhone vs high-end professional cameras

I recently retired from being production manager at a TV station. We were using iPhones to record fantastic quality video for years. I’ve yet to meet a professional who doesn’t think iPhone video or photos isn’t good enough. The one’s I’ve met and worked with love them, using them more and more. Now, you can’t change lenses, there are limitations, but for 75% of any professional work, they’re fantastic. I’ve told folks I shot on higher end cameras, they love the video, we never told them it was actually an iPhone. Folks can’t tell the difference, professional camera folks can in upper end productions. But there is no one-size-fits-all camera yet. iPhone video is great, but it still isn’t RED.

Now, if you’re working network TV or feature film, there’s LOTS of shots an iPhone won’t get for you, and RED cameras and professional studios have NEVER been on any sort of decline. Not sure who told you that, they’re wrong.

I do it weekly and it works fine, as long as we both have the same 3rd party and self-made templates and plugins, 10.6.10. Be sure to select the correct Metadata View, I’d suggest General if not Extended, depending on what your co-editor needs. And I’d use version 1.10. If you’re both on 10.6.10 there shouldn’t be any issues.

So what is the Frame Size of your Project?

If no zooming nor panning, size photos to fit as closely as you can to that Frame Size.

If you do want to do zooming and panning, Figure out how far into the image you need to zoom, how much will you have to enlarge it? Then size the photo file you’re importing to match that.

The issue with photos being too large, is the strain the put FCPX under, when way too oversized. That’s all there is to it.

October 31, 2023 at 3:46 pm in reply to: Export from an edited synchronised clip

So you double-clicked the Sync Clip and edited right inside it.

With that Sync Clip open in the timeline, just export, works fine.

Selecting the Sync Clip in the Browser works, too.

But if you select the copy in the Browser, and it does not reflect the work you did, then you did in fact drop that. Sync Clip into a Project somewhere and made the changes to the “copy” in that Project timeline.
