During Apple’s ‘Scary Fast’ event, the company revealed that the whole event was shot on an iPhone. I know professional photographers and filmmakers will argue that the iPhone is still not there today…they will argue that truly large image sensors is key and that’s not possible with iPhones or other phones. However, I remember similar arguments being made with DAW “home recording systems” vs professional studios and we know where that landed today (professional recording studios have been on the decline since the advent of digital cloud and computational technology). Do we still need to care about high-end expensive RED cameras when for half the price, you can but 5 iPhones to get the job done?

I recently retired from being production manager at a TV station. We were using iPhones to record fantastic quality video for years. I’ve yet to meet a professional who doesn’t think iPhone video or photos isn’t good enough. The one’s I’ve met and worked with love them, using them more and more. Now, you can’t change lenses, there are limitations, but for 75% of any professional work, they’re fantastic. I’ve told folks I shot on higher end cameras, they love the video, we never told them it was actually an iPhone. Folks can’t tell the difference, professional camera folks can in upper end productions. But there is no one-size-fits-all camera yet. iPhone video is great, but it still isn’t RED.

Now, if you’re working network TV or feature film, there’s LOTS of shots an iPhone won’t get for you, and RED cameras and professional studios have NEVER been on any sort of decline. Not sure who told you that, they’re wrong.

Echoing on Ben’s comment, I earlier this year found the CEO’s iPhone in my hand for a company needing a crowd investor video.

Video worked well, and the company got more money than they asked for.

Adding that you can shoot 4K at 25fps.
But do make sure that you have enough battery and storage, if filming a bigger job 😉
