[Juan Salvo] “The teranex is nowhere near as good as the alchemist.”

Well I read this from BlackMagicDesigns website…

    Teranex Processing
The world’s leading standards converter lets you
move between hundreds of video formats instantly!

So are you saying the word ‘leading’ has different meanings around the world?

  • Using non-timebased connection could be your problem.

What I do is use a Sony Digital8 TRV-340E which also plays Hi8 but its advantage is that it has Firewire out which makes for rock steady performance AND a much better signal path (read DIGITAL).

    And what about AMPEX?

I still have an Ampex Century 230 sitting in one of my back racks.
This was an amazing switcher that interfaced directly with their own digital effects units (ADO).

Do you think ‘outsourcing’ would have saved them?

We do a lot of tape duplication for a major international distributor and it doesn’t look like its going to let up anytime soon.
ALSO, we are doing a whole mass of memory card (ex1, P2 etc) playouts onto HDCAM for archiving.
Tape is definitely not dead here.

    Hello Daniel

I reported the problem to Avid and they wanted me to PAY MONEY before they would look into THEIR PROBLEM!

I have since STOPPED using any of my 4 Avid systems and gone back to FCP7 which DOES do frame accurate edit to tape.

I have now reported the problem with Blackmagic who are investigating the problem.
It may help if you also report it to Blackmagic support.

  • No. Its just an I/O box

  • My bet they are using a long gop format like XDCAM or HDV.
When editing with long gop and you do a lot of scrubbing it sucks up the memory for frame calculations and for some reason never returns all the memory when finished scrubbing (memory leak).
The only solution is to occasionally close FCP and then re-open; otherwise you will get a visit from General Error and then you will be in all sorts of problems…..

  • Easy – just instal the apps and then the latest Multibridge Desktop drivers and away you go. Nothing special to look out for.

We have all 4 software’s in my shop (have to cater for those ‘walk-in-the-doorer’s) but a surprising benefit I have discovered is that we are getting a lot of Avid ‘dry hires’ which rarely happened with FCP7.
I prefer FCP7 because I am not up to speed yet with Avid but I am just going to have to jump in the deep end eventually.

I suppose it would have been better if FCP7 had just shut down completely and forced me somewhere else.

Why is it that most licenses expire eg driver license, pilots license etc but not a software license….. weird….

    (do marriage licenses expire?)

  • Ensemble make blue box devices.

The interesting thing here to consider is that it takes a lot more electronics to strip the embedded audio out of a signal than to just pass it thru.

The Ensemble DA can strip the audio but uses dip switches.
