They certainly should, yes. You can configure the cam to output a 480i signal, even when shooting HD, and that component output works fine on monitors, so it should work fine as an input to a BetaSP deck.—————–

The “catch” is that every dealer I talked to has a backorder list about a hundred deep, so they’ll be in scarce supply for a while. But yes, it basically is everything the DVX is, but adding high-def and tapeless acquisition.

The storage just got cut in price to 1/3 of what it was, and it works with the Mac today. In fact, a 2-year-old 1.3ghz Powerbook works just fine with it right now. You can do exactly that. It has a few frame rates that might be appropriate; 22fps would look just a little faster than real life, 18fps would be really quite fast, and then there’s also 12fps, which would be twice as fast as realtime, and that would start looking fake.

It’s a lot simpler than what you’ve outlined. I don’t use FCP so someone should step in and correct if I get this wrong but:
1) Shoot with HVX in 24PN mode on the card
2) Plug the card into your laptop (forget about having to firewire in the footage)
3) Ingest the footage to your hard disk (which will automatically convert it to Quicktime)
4) Edit ONLINE (not offline) in the DVCPRO-HD codec, full-screen, full-res, full-motion realtime
5) Forget the 1200A deck, no need for that at all, and it’s about $25,000 if you don’t have one already. You should be able to render directly to an uncompressed 10-bit final file, no? If not, just output the file as DVCPRO-HD to a FAT32 firewire hard disk, and then plug that into your PC and copy the file over.
6) Edit/correct/output as normal.[Carlos] “1. You don’t have to even worry about it. When you shoot in the 24PN mode, FCP automatically understands the footage exactly like you’d want it to. No additional steps necessary, just import the footage and it’ll work the way you want.[Carlos] “3. Can you have three formats mixed in the same P2 card?”
Absolutely. The card is just like a hard disk, so it can have any formats on it. You can mix DV, DVCPRO25, DV50, 720p, 1080p, 1080i, anything and everything.—————–

Each dot on the graph represents 2dB. The transition from white to red happens at the changeover from -12 to -10. So one or two or three dots of red are still well under the clipping limit. One dot of red = -10, two dots = -8, three = -6, etc.—————–

I don’t use FCP, so you’ll have to get some advice on best FCP settings from Noah or other FCP expert. However, if you’re planning on making a 24p DVD, definitely shoot 24pa. If you want a 16×9 image, definitely use squeeze/24pa/thin line detail.

Just let the camera roll. How long does it take to complete a full sunrise? Certainly less than 60 minutes! So start the camera, let it roll straight through, and then import the footage in your NLE and speed it up to whatever time-lapse-equivalent speed you’re looking for.
Just heed proper precautions about pointing your lens at the sun and you should easily get what you’re looking for.

Someone at a trade show in Europe? Japan? Don’t remember… posted a video showing a P2 card going into a Mac laptop PCMCIA slot, then FCP executing an “import” command right off the card. So that capability may not be publicly released yet, but it certainly seems reasonable to expect that it’ll be here. That workflow already works off a PC, and I believe it’s coming for the Mac as soon as Apple finishes whatever OS/driver they need and releases it.

None that integrate focus have been released on the market yet. We should see at least the VariZoom previewed at DV Expo West; perhaps others will be ready by then too.

Was it nNovia perhaps? I’ve heard nothing but great reports about the nNovia QuickCapture, so if they’re developing a product for the HVX that would be most interesting.
Shining may have low prices, but I haven’t heard too many positive reports about the product reliability. They OEM the CitiDisk under other brands, including the ADS Pyro Drive and the MCE QuickStream. There were a flood of negative reports about the QuickStream when it first came out. I’ve shied away from any Shining product since then; if they’ve got a good handle on QC then their pricing will be most tempting, but if the reliability issues aren’t sorted out then it wouldn’t be a good idea no matter how low the price is.
