Yes it does. The s-video and composite video ports will provide a live downconvert, and you can configure the component outputs to either display native, cross-converted, or downconverted signals.

If you’re referring to the H.264’s, neither was output truly properly. The 1080 clip was messed up — it’s been scaled down to 720 and the pulldown is still present. I uploaded a raw 24p, pulldown-free, properly-sized .WMV file, and that’s what someone should look at rather than the H.264.
As for the 720p H.264, that was apparently output as a 60p file, and I don’t know why they did that. It should have been output as a 24p file… I’d replace that one too, but I’m relying on the prerelease alpha version of DVFilm Maker, which works very well for 1080/24pa footage but I don’t think it handles 720p/variable frame rate yet…

Get this — one of the camera engineers in the Panasonic booth told a customer that the internals of the HVX are running Linux and an Apache web server. So if someone were a skilled Linux programmer and could somehow hack into it… well, heck, if Matteo could saw the lens off his FX1 and make it an interchangeable lens, what could a home hacker do with a full Linux operating system in there? Fun times ahead, hopefully! 😉

The small camera (HVX200) has a miniDV tape deck in it. The larger cameras (the SPX800 and SPC700) don’t. The HVX200 is designed as a transitional product, to accomodate DV shooters as they move into HD. Basically an HVX is a DVX100B plus a whole lot more, so they kept the tape for those shooters who make a living shooting DV.
A miniDV tape deck is cheap — it probably adds something like $20 to the cost of the HVX. On the other hand, the tape deck for the bigger cameras costs an awful lot more — a DVCPRO50 deck costs about $7000. That explains why the SPX800 costs about $7,000 less than the otherwise-identical-but-tape-based SDX900.

Larger capacities are always going to be expensive at first, until the production run hits what Jan called a “breakthrough”. The 4gb cards just did that, so they dropped from $1750 all the way to $650. They’re almost the same price as a Sandisk Extreme III 4gb compactflash card ($599 retail). The 8gb card is going to carry a premium until it hits that same “breakthrough” point.

I have shot 1080/24p on it. It’s absolutely unquestionably without a doubt now and forever completely and thoroughly capable of shooting 1080/24p and 1080/30p. Yes yes yes yes yes it does 1080/24p and 1080/30p. Yes it will have 1080p. Yes.
(this is a rumor that won’t go away, so I’m trying to answer it once and for all!) 🙂

No you cannot. Only a FireStore (or comparable device) could be used.If someone wrote software for the ipod that gave it AV/C control intelligence then maybe it’d be possible, but I doubt we’ll ever see that.

It is my understanding that yes, it will have those capabilities. I was quite surprised to hear it, but apparently Panasonic has been working in partnership with them to make sure it does those things and has provided whatever firewire controls were necessary to make it work. Obviously we won’t know for 100% certain until it ships, but I believe the current plan is to allow exactly that functionality.—————–

Yes, you could do that. But that’s not the only way to do it, nor is it necessarily the best way to do it. You can just plug the card right into your computer (PCMCIA slot on a powerbook, or get an under-$100 USB-to-PCMCIA adapter for your desktop). That way you don’t have to tie the camera up when copying the card data over.[Dale McCready] “Will FCP recognise this camera through Firewire to read off P2 with it’s thumbnail setup or does it just ignore that?”
FCP doesn’t recognize the MXF files yet, I don’t think (maybe it does… but I don’t think so). There’s an “Ingest Panasonic P2” command that copies the files over to your hard disk and unwraps the MXF wrapper and re-wraps it as a QuickTime wrapper. A future update to FCP should allow for full native MXF support, which would give you the ability to directly edit right off the card.—————–

That’s probably the best suggestion, if you have to spend the cash this year. The HVX is massively back-ordered, I asked four or five dealers and they all said the same thing: they have 80 to 100 orders each. So they’ll probably be in very scarce supply until all the backorders are filled; the odds of getting one in December are pretty low unless you pre-ordered early.—————–
