  • hvx200 straight to ipod firewire recording a go!? no 1080p!?

Posted by Nik Manning on December 7, 2005 at 8:29 pm

if I read the panasonic site correctly the hvx200 will transfer straight to ipods with firewire, but no 1080p.

“Can I use the FireWire output to record directly to a FireWire drive or Apple iPod?
Yes, we have done tests on original iPod models over FireWire by putting the camera into the “Host Mode,” though its performance is a little slow. However, the latest iPod models do not have a FireWire port. On a standard 1394 drive, it would be a bit faster.”

Could you clear this up Graeme?

Why no 1080p? I don’t get you. Where does it say that?

Basically, you stop shooting, connect your drive, and dump the P2 to your drive. Faster the drive, faster it happens.

    Panasonic’s Site says
“What signals does the HVX200 record?
This camera handles standard-definition in 3 modes: DV and DVCPRO (which are 25 Mbps) and DVCPRO50, which as the name implies, is 50 Mbps, which is also 4:2:2 and has been compared favorably with DigiBeta. It also handles DVCPRO HD high-definition at 100 Mbps in 1080i or 720p, recording onto P2 cards.”

    That’s 1080i and 720p it doesn’t say 1080p at all.

“Can I record directly to a FireStore drive (Focus Enhancements)?
Yes. The FS-100 from Focus Enhancements will give 90-100 minutes of high-definition content in 720p or 1080i modes. In DVCPRO50 it will record 200 minutes, and in DV or DVCPRO it will offer 400 minutes.

Can I use the FireWire output to record directly to a FireWire drive or Apple iPod?
Yes, we have done tests on original iPod models over FireWire by putting the camera into the “Host Mode,” though its performance is a little slow. However, the latest iPod models do not have a FireWire port. On a standard 1394 drive, it would be a bit faster.”

this makes it seem as if you can go directly to an ipod skipping the p2 card like the firestore can.
ps I am pro panasonic by the way. I have a mini dv panasonic I use to capture footage at home.

I think that’s just an error on the FAQ. The camera does 1080p24 and 1080p30, both get embedded in a 1080i stream though.

    Any response to this?

So plain english- Can I buy an ipod that has firewire instead of a firestore to capture live from the hvx200 without a p2 card?(in 720/24p since it is a little slow.)

the firewire drives are used for dumping off the P2. You need something like firestore or a laptop to capture straight to disk.

Is camera’s usb totally useless now? You can’t copy p2 to eg. iPod through it?

[Nik Manning] ” However, the latest iPod models do not have a FireWire port. On a standard 1394 drive, it would be a bit faster.””

This is in reference to transferring the files off of the P2 card. If you want to record a streaming signal you need a hard drive on the receiving end that is intelligent.

The USB port is for working file transfer to a PC.

[Jan Crittenden Livingston] “The USB port is for working file transfer to a PC.”

And iPod is not a PC, so usb cannot be used for dumping to iPod?
    Why this kind of limitation?
Well, lets hope that apple incorporates fw to future iPods again…

[toke lahti] “And iPod is not a PC, so usb cannot be used for dumping to iPod?”

The iPod is indeed more than a HD – it does have intelligence. However, Apple is not encouraging developers to do any software development for the iPod so, until then it would be a rogue experimentation at best.

No you cannot. Only a FireStore (or comparable device) could be used.

If someone wrote software for the ipod that gave it AV/C control intelligence then maybe it’d be possible, but I doubt we’ll ever see that.
