Everyone, please request MXF support from Apple. They need to hear us, because that is the one missing element in an almost perfect editing system.
A proper P2 Viewer for the Mac would be most ideal as well.

None of that sounds normal. On my unit there’s no clicking whatsoever, and as Gary pointed out the unit has no moving parts so there’s nothing that could be clicking.
And 48fps looks every bit as clean as all other frame rates, there’s no ghosting or smear or anything. I shot every frame rate in every mode for an article I did on another website, not sure whether Ron would be cool with me linking to it or not but I did a full framerate article and I can assure you that every frame rate performed exactly as expected and was completely clean with no artifacting or ghosting or anything.

It would be more accurate than tape, in that the MXF files are a 1:1 direct frame-accurate importation. You wouldn’t have to re-capture and rely on timecode etc; you’d just unwrap/rewrap the original MXF’s and you would restore it to perfect frame-accurate original state again.
Native MXF support would be a wonderful thing; I hope every HVX/FCP user follows the link Peter gracefully provided and submits a request for this!

No, not really… I mean… not by manipulating image settings. You can control the iris in 1/6-stop increments and you can control the shutter in 0.5-degree increments, so you could control exposure through the shutter in about 1% increments, but you don’t have control over stretching or compressing the gamma in any way in the menus. The only controls you have in that regard are the master pedestal and the knee.
The menu settings are very similar to the DVX100 series, as far as image control/scene file settings.

There’s a row of icons in the upper right, and one of them is a red “X” which removes a directory. Well, to the left of that red “X” is a weird dashed-outline box… that’s the one that lets you add a directory.

What I mean is, for most of the gamma curves you have the option of setting the knee to auto, low, mid, or high (which correspond to about 80 IRE, 90 IRE, or 100 IRE). On three of the gammas (CINELIKE-V and CINELIKE-D and NEWS) the knee is non-adjustable, but on the others you can adjust it.
(note: I said you could adjust it on six of the 8, but that’s wrong, it’s adjustable on five of the 8).

Any archive solution OTHER than DVCPRO-HD tape will retain all the metadata. Only DVCPRO-HD tape discards the metadata.
(note: this presupposes that you’re backing up the original MXF files. If you’re using FCP 5.0.4 and editing off of the unwrapped/rewrapped Quicktime files, those files don’t have associated metadata with ’em anymore. We really would benefit from nagging Apple to include native MXF support instead of QT rewrapping.)

It’s a start, and the HVX has some very familiar DVX-like features. The HVX is a superset of the DVX.
There will be a new The HVX Book/DVD available fairly soon. The book’s out to the proofreaders now, and the DVD should be finished up by the end of this month.

So, once P2 Contents and single file are copied from the card onto my hard drive (and put into a folder), can it be played by the P2 viewer app? If so, how?Any instructions anywhere for the P2 viewer app? What’s a virtual P2 card?
Your questions are linked. Yes you can play it back in the P2 viewer app, by using the footage as a virtual P2 card. Once you point the P2 Viewer at the folder where you copied the footage, that folder becomes a “virtual” P2 card, and the Viewer program can play that footage back.
I don’t know if there’s any documentation available for the program; I kind of had to poke around with it to figure it out. You can go to the Tools menu and choose “setting virtual P2 cards”, which will bring up a dialog box; one of the options will let you navigate to a directory and choose it. Once you do that, you’ve registered that directory as a virtual card. Then in the left side window you can tell it to display the secondary bin as “all virtual p2 cards”, and all your hard disk clips will show up in that window.
