Oh, it is nice indeed. Canopus Edius Broadcast does it. One reason I’ve been using Edius more and more, and FCP less and less. Sure would be nice if Apple would just take that one last step and add MXF support to the timeline!

Avid on the PC does work with HVX files, yes. P2 isn’t PC-native in any way, but Avid does have native support for the HVX on the PC. Most formats are supported already, but not all; hopefully the rest will be added soon.
Yes Avid supports the MXF format, no it doesn’t have to be converted.

You can downsample in-camera to DV 480/60i and edit that DV in Premiere Pro, if you want.
Or you can use DVFilm.com’s RayLight program which will let you use HVX files in Premiere Pro, and downsample in Premiere.

“drop frame” and “non drop frame”. Two different numbering systems for how the frames get counted. Doesn’t make a whole lot of difference which one you use, just so long as everyone’s using the same system. Ask your editor which one they prefer.

I’ve seen reports from FX1/Z1 owners, HD100 owners, DVX owners, all complaining about the same thing — blown firewire ports.
Firewire was designed to be hot-swappable, but in reality it doesn’t appear to be a good idea. Most of the reports seem to be centered on the Mac; I don’t know if it’s because Mac laptops usually feature six-pin firewire ports whereas my PC laptops all have 4-pin… maybe hot-plugging 4-pin is safer, but using a six-to-4 can apparently cause the issue.

To be more exact, you can try filming the XL2’s timecode display on one of the other cameras. That way your editor can compare the actual timecode to the filmed timecode and hopefully come up with a constant offset.
Also, ensure that you’re using the same mode (DF or NDF) on all cameras.

FYI, the Panasonic cable is not unique, it’s compatible with the Canon XLH1’s component output, and it’s compatible with the JVC HD1 and HD10’s component outputs.
So the odds are very good that this cable will work. Good enough that I just ordered one today too… 🙂
