I was curious about the statement about 1080/50i as well (that 720/25p is transported within the 720/50i stream). That seems quite curious, but — Marcus has written his own DVCPRO-HD codec and probably knows more about it than all the rest of us combined.
I would expect that a 720/50p frame would take up more space than a frame from a 720/60p stream, since 100 megabits / 50 fps = 2 megabits per frame, vs. 100 megabits / 60 fps = 1.67 megabits per frame. But does that necessarily mean that it’s carried in a 1080 stream? Or that they’ve just updated the standard for the new 720/50p stream?
Marcus, I sent you contact info for someone from Panasonic EU — hopefully he can help you to understand everything they changed in the new 720/50p and 720/25p modes.

Mike does have a point here. If you’re making business decisions based on an unreleased product’s announced shipping date, well, that’s not necessarily wise. Look at the FireStore for the HD100 — it was announced at NAB 2005, and didn’t end up shipping until over 11 months later. And the FireStore FS-4 was how many months late? Five I think?
Keep an eye to the future, know what’s coming, and make tentative plans. But don’t count on any unreleased chickens until they’ve actually hatched.

They tested emac, powerbook, and G5 performance through USB2 and firewire, and found that firewire was twice as fast as USB2 in the Apple implementation. Same drive, same enclosure (a combo USB2/firewire enclosure), they just changed from using USB2 to using FireWire. On the firewire test they got 38 megabytes per second transfer speed, but when switching to the USB2 port that dropped to 18 megabytes per second.
Then they tested that same USB2 drive on a WinXP USB2 system and found that the WinXP USB2 performance nearly equalled the firewire performance. WinXP USB2 delivered 33 megabytes per second.
So it would appear that, according to this article, not all is well with the Mac’s USB2 performance. Perhaps newer Macs (especially intel macs?) have better USB2 performance?

Actually it’s really easy to tell the MXF audio files apart from the MXF video files.
They’re named differently.
The video files use a six-character base name, the audio files use eight (the last two characters being the digits 00, 01, 02, and 03, to differentiate which audio track that MXF file represents).
So if you had a clip with a base name of:
0021R5.mxfthen the audio files would be:
0021R500.mxf
0021R501.mxf
0021R502.mxf

I know quite well how to use the JVC, as I bought one of the first models in the US (which I subsequently sent back).Absolutely every aspect of the comparison was thoroughly documented and anyone, anywhere, is free to duplicate the results and they will find that there was NO post manipulation, NO attempt to make one look better or worse than the other. The methodology is out there, you can see exactly what I did, and I posted the raw original m2t file straight from the HD100.

For all your questions, the answer is the same: 24pN introduces no compromises and is the better choice for your circumstances.
The only time to use the “24p” mode is when you need to stream data out the firewire port, for live capture to an NLE or HD Rack or to a DVCPRO-HD tape deck or to the firestore. As long as your editing program supports 24pN clips (and FCP does) and you’re recording to the P2 cards, 24pN is the superior mode because of the space efficiency.

You’re confusing the camera record button with the VCR/MCR stop button.
The camera “stop” button is the same as the “start” button, which is of course the red button you press with your thumb in camera mode.
The MCR/VCR stop button is the same button used to stop a clip playback from the thumbnail screen. Or, said another way, when you’re navigating the menus, it’s the same button you use to navigate “down”. The “play” button is the same as going “up” in the menus, and the “stop” button is the same as the one that navigates down in the menus.

Have you been setting the HVX in PC/DUB mode? You have to set the menus to “USB DEVICE” and you have to go to MCR mode and then hold the button down for several seconds before the camera toggles into PC/DUB mode. USB is only active in PC/DUB mode.
