How to tell mxf audio vs. mxf video file
Other than possibly size of file, is there a way to tell the difference in an mxf file. I have a hard drive that went nuts and sent files all over the place. The data is there, it is just not in the proper folders. I am tryin to trick it and rebuild some of the files in the folders. I know, Iknow…..
also, is there any program, avid, etc, that can just simply import or open mxf files. I know fcp 5.04 only imports p2. It does not allow a file or folder import.

Size would be the obvious one.

And yes, Avid does read MXF files natively. But I am not sure if it can with them scattered everywhere. Once that happens your data is scattered, and might be tough for any application to read.
But I can’t say for sure. I haven’t used Avid to read MXF files.

Actually it’s really easy to tell the MXF audio files apart from the MXF video files.
They’re named differently.
The video files use a six-character base name, the audio files use eight (the last two characters being the digits 00, 01, 02, and 03, to differentiate which audio track that MXF file represents).
So if you had a clip with a base name of:
0021R5.mxfthen the audio files would be:
0021R500.mxf
0021R501.mxf
0021R502.mxf
0021R503.mxf—————–

FCP 5.1 is the same as 5.0.4 when it comes to .mxf,
I have also ordered Canopus and use the P2 viewer on the
PC all the time. Once you get the P2 info to QT in FCP
it is easy to edit. I am receiving .mxf files and need
something that will read them as well. I have used Raylight

There’s also HDLOG on the Mac side for direct MXF, metadata access but it’s quite expensive IMHO.

I would be a little surprised if the next major release of FCP did not include direct MXF editing and metadata handling.
