I have done quite a bit of searching and reading, but still need help!
I am trying to understand the practical (not necessarily the technical) advantages/disadavantages of shooting 720 24PN on the HVX200 for editing in Final Cut Pro 5.04 (or 5.1 if required).
This weekend I will be onboard a racing yacht, documenting a two day race from Newport Beach to Ensenada. We want the appearance of film, but it is unlikely that the material will make it to film. More likely, it will be initially distributed in H.264 for computer playback, and then on SD or HD DVD – (but there’s always the possibility it could make it to some form of television).

Getting additional recording time out of our 4 x 4 gb P2 cards is quite important, even though we will have a P2 Store and G4 Powerbook hooked up to external Firewire Drives.

However I need understand the practical workflow differences between 24P and 24PN so we won’t handicap ourselves by going with the latter.

    eg.

For all your questions, the answer is the same: 24pN introduces no compromises and is the better choice for your circumstances.

The only time to use the “24p” mode is when you need to stream data out the firewire port, for live capture to an NLE or HD Rack or to a DVCPRO-HD tape deck or to the firestore. As long as your editing program supports 24pN clips (and FCP does) and you’re recording to the P2 cards, 24pN is the superior mode because of the space efficiency.

I 2nd Barrys post. We have done extensive shooting in 720 24pN.
Even with only 2-4 gig cards and a laptop you can do plenty
of the kind of shooting you are talking about. Editing is easy
and without the usual technical baggage that HD use to bring.
As far as H.264 and SD to DVD you will be impressed with the results.
    Good Shooting!!

Thanks to all for the feedback. I now feel very confident moving forward. All that’s left to do now is to locate those sea sickness pills!!!

    Hi David,
If you’re worried about sea sickness, I’d forget about pills and go with the ‘Transderm Scop’ Patch. It has scopolomine. It comes in a little patch (a small round band-aid about the size of a nickel) which you place behind and below your ear. I’ve used the patch on several scuba diving trips where I spent over a week aboard. In some very rough seas I was fine, whereas others who relied on pills were very ill. I experienced no side effects – just avoid alcohol. Check it out. It might save the day for you.

This might be a little late to jump in and slightly off topic, but regarding seasickness, if you can’t get the Transderm Scop patch, then try “less drowsy Dramamine” along with a powdered-ginger capsule.

Works well for me and I’m sometimes sensitive to getting seasick, even though I have my own boat. Seems to work well for a lot of others, too.

And if you do get seasick, drink a lot of water. While it won’t stop the sickness, it’ll make what happens next a lot more tolerable.

Thanks to all for the advice on P2 and sea sickness… it’s amazing the information you can get from Creative Cow!!!

Actually, I’m not a bad traveller, and have just got back from the race which was a terrific experience. I’ve also had a great time (so far) with P2. I will try to post my workflow soon in the hope that it will help a few people – like you have all helped me.

    Thanks again.
