Not necessarily! If you use the “frame rate hack” and set your frame rate # to 14, you’ll get 720/24p in an HVX200E or HVX202EN. Now, it’s not exactly 23.976 or 24.000 fps, but it’s close, it’s 24.033333. But it’s there if you want it.

The label “p2” is a Panasonic thing, so if someone wanted to call their product “P2” they’d have to license it. But there’s nothing stopping someone from coming up with their own, compatible product — that’s what specialized communications is doing with their CinePorter, for example.

Yes, you can “print to video” back to the card. Make sure the camera’s in the same mode as your timeline (i.e., 1080/60i or 720/60p) and put it in MCR mode, and turn off the thumbnails, and turn off device control. Then you should be able to see your timeline scrubbing on the camera’s LCD; just “print to video” and press the two MCR RECORD buttons (above the menu navigation buttons) and it’ll record the incoming firewire stream.

Use P2 Log from Imagine Software. That will let you export your 720/25p and 720/50p clips in a format that FCP can recognize.

It’s not “all”, no. But it is several. Currently Vegas and Premiere don’t support it.
The issue remains. It is Apple’s need to convert the files that has created the situation that you have. And I really don’t see why it needs to stay that way. You can put JPGs and TGAs and TIFFs all on the timeline, right? In Vegas you can put a .mov or an .avi or a .mp4 or a DVD’s .vob file right on the timeline. In Avid you can put a .mov or a .avi or a .mxf right on the timeline. Why won’t FCP just allow you to drop an MXF right on the timeline? Seems like it really wouldn’t be all that hard, and it would produce tremendous workflow benefits.

Correct.
Therein lies the problem. Apple makes you convert them. If they supported MXF files natively (like EDIUS and Avid do; heck, for DV50, even Liquid supports it) then there wouldn’t be a problem.
It’s Apple’s insistence on converting the files to QT that has created the problem.
Hopefully enough of you are out there clicking on the “request a feature” button to request MXF timeline support to them that they eventually add MXF file support. Then all these issues go away (and editing in FCP becomes a lot quicker because you don’t need to go through the “import P2” phase).

It’s been a little brisk on the north island, yes. They showed me a satellite photo of the south island, it appeared to be entirely blanketed in snow! North island is indeed gorgeous, and the black sand beaches have just the most amazingly soft sand…
Done with Auckland, headed to Wellington tomorrow. Wellington’s sold out, but there’s still room in Wanaka for those who may want to attend. Don’t know about the availability in Australia; people should contact Rob Myers at Panasonic Australia if they want to attend.
