Why can’t you see onscreen timecode during recording? It’s displayed at all times in the upper left (unless you’ve used the COUNTER button and toggled it off…)

DV pukes under solid blue and solid red. You’re experiencing the effects of low chroma sampling (4:1:1 on US versions, 4:2:0 on PAL versions). When something is solid blue or solid red, your effective resolution drops from 720×480 down to 180×480, which makes everything look blurry.

Does the digital breakup happen during playback from the camera?
Or, far more likely, is it only when it’s been imported on a Mac?

Definitely download the manual.
For a quick answer, go in the menus, to scene file, then scroll down to “progressive”, and choose “24p”.
Then save that setting, or it’ll revert back to interlaced if you turn the camera off or change the battery.

There’s no way to get the timecode to overlay the footage. Any NLE should be able to show you the timecode of the clip, but the DVX can’t “burn in” the timecode.

Haven’t seen those clips, so the HVX footage may be HD, but even in SD the HVX is noticeably sharper than the DVX.

To a special hard-disk recorder, yes. FireStore FS-100 is available now, and the CinePorter should be out in a few months.

No camera can record to a plain external firewire hard disk. They all require special hard-disk recorders like the FireStore.

As an option a jack pack would be nice. Canon charges $3,000 extra for it on the G1 vs. the A1, which is the only difference between them. I wouldn’t want to see people having to pay $3,000 extra for an HVX just to get that when for a lot of users it wouldn’t ever even be used, so if they offered it as an option that could be bought by those who DID need it, that’d be sweet.
As for inverting the image — they’ve been told repeatedly, they know all about it. Until then, just get a Letus35 Flip Enhanced adapter — it’s half the cost of the other ones, it looks great, and it does the flip for you. No hassles, no “magnet”, no “mounting the LCD upside down”, no “flip in post” — it just works. And it’s $700.
