What it’ll do is use the Comp Camera’s position for rendering the viewpoint of the sphere.

I absolutely agree that for field work, the Panasonic HVX 200 seems to have the edge, in terms of DVCProHD to P2 cards. By the end of the year we’ll know how good the Panasonics images look with its fixed lens, compared to the probably better lens on the Canon.
I’m pretty sure the HDV won’t be able to stand up to DVCProHD.
A portable device that does real-time compression to something like Cineform’s HD codec and records to a single disk would seem like a bestseller.

You realize that uncompressed 4:2:2 1080 runs from around 100 MB/s, right? Even FW800 won’t manage those kinds of datarates.
And if it did, you’d need a RAID of at least 4 drives to get reliable performance.
To record uncompressed HD-SDI you’d be best off building a computer with HD-SDI and RAID for now. Not the most convienient or portable solution, but you’re getting uncompressed 4:2:2 in return.

The upcoming Panasonic supports DVCProHD @ 100Mbps (I wouldn’t use the term ‘true HD’ since it just screams for discussions) – which is definitely higher quality than 25Mbps HDV.
However the Canon XL H1 seems to output uncompressed 4:2:2 1080i over HD-SDI, which means if you bypass tape and record directly to disk using say a Decklink HD board in a computer, you’ll probably get pretty spectacular images.

Well, it can be all kinds of things.
Sometimes a sourceclip is corrupted, but it can also be a plug-in that causes the problem. The only way to find out is to enable layer-for-layer while rendering untill you find the one that causes the crash.
One other option: depending on what codec you’re rendering to, 13 minutes of footage might be a file of around 4 GB. If you’re rendering to a FAT32 partition, which has a filesize limit of 4GB, then this would cause the error. The way to solve that is to format the drive NTFS if you’re on Windows, or set the render to automatically divide in chunks of say 3GB – you can do this in the output options in the Render Que.

Well, there’s many different ways to suggest fast motion. Having a background with lots of motionblur helps, if the camera stays on the object. Using a seamless background with the offset filter animated does the trick.
Having the object tremble or shake a little due to the supposedly high speed works.
A classic is to stretch the object a little along the axis of movement.

Well, personally I wouldn’t bother creating 2 versions. Just do the 24p version and then speed it up 4% for PAL distribution.
That’s what they do for every movie in PAL territory. I figure, if it’s good enough for Star Wars or LOTR, it’ll be good enough for most of us…

I would never master to DV. If you output to MJPEG at a high quality it will be a lot better. If you choose Lossless compression – such as QT Animation @ 100% – you’ll get the best quality.
You could always set up the animation at HD resolution, and preview at half, or even quarter resolution.

I think your problem would be solved by applying the alpha to the clip, then precomposing and then applying Twixtor to the resulting comp.
