hi, here’s a real newbie question:

for the first time in my cariier, i’m working on a animation project that is sold to a TV station (PAL) but we also want to make a film copy for festivals and such. the resolution is 1920×1080 but i’m wondering which framerate to work in? so far, i haven’t been able to decide between 24 and 25 fps.

and how does the whole process go? if i render the final animation as 25 fps

    I recommend 2 renders

25fps, 720×576, interlaced – upper field first for your TV version.
24fps, progressive (ie, no fields) for you Film version

    Hope that helps,
    Michael

Give me some more detail and I’ll be able to help you a bit more:

What software are you using? (ie. make a maya animation and composite in AE)
Are you using any footage or just animating from stills?

The more detail, the more help I’ll hopefully be able to give.

    Good luck,
    Michael

Well, personally I wouldn’t bother creating 2 versions. Just do the 24p version and then speed it up 4% for PAL distribution.

That’s what they do for every movie in PAL territory. I figure, if it’s good enough for Star Wars or LOTR, it’ll be good enough for most of us…

    Sorry, been busy.
If it’s all graphics like you say, then you can make the animation… and then afterwards just change the frame rate of the Comp and render at a different frame rate.

    Hope that helps,
    Michael
