September 27, 2005 at 7:45 pm in reply to: Poor motion blur in After Effects 6.5?

AE has had 16 motionsamples in it’s motionblur ever since motionblur was introduced in… well… a long long time agon in a galaxy…

Anyway… your alternative is adding motionblur using ReelSmart MotionBlur by Re:VisionFX.

Well, I haven’t tried networking XP64 and XP Pro yet, but I think that should work well. It’s the networking Macs and PC’s that can be a bit more complicated for network rendering.

Although AE isn’t 64-bit yet it will run fine on a 64-bit CPU and even on 64-bit Windows.

If you want to do network rendering you can mix and match different CPU’s without a problem, although it’s better to stick to one OS.

There’s also no problem if one system uses SCSI and the other uses SATA.

    It won’t work.

You can import Photoshop files into AE though… so that would be an option.

    September 20, 2005 at 10:17 am in reply to: Here’s a challange…

Well, I’ve given it 10 minutes:

You could go for displacement mapping, but for this particular one I went with manual animation of the two pieces.

First you need to have an animated growing ice fragment. A simple mask in a wedge shape, revealed over time.

Then I created a separate composition for the Title.

This composition is then dragged into a 3rd comp (Final Comp) – together with the Animated Ice Fragment comp.

Using the Set Matte effects, I set the Ice Fragment comp as the matte for the text layer. Now I duplicate the Title layer and inverse the matte on the top layer.

Now we have the complete title, but in two fragments on separate layers.

I animate these two slightly to move apart after the crack is complete.

From here it’s playing around. I quickly added some CC Vector Blur around the cracked edge, and a blueish gradient to match the look.

You could easily add some of the extra texture and icy elements in photoshop, and reveal them using an animated mask – but I was guessing that the above part was what you needed :-). It’s still a bit crude, but I have to get back to work 🙂

Here’s my AE project. Hope together with the brief explanation it makes sense.

September 20, 2005 at 8:18 am in reply to: Branding or burning effect. How do I do it?

Well, if possible I’d avoid the actual flames since they might come out looking very cheesy.

For the logo to appear as it’s burned in you could try a combination of Simple Choker (if the logo is on a transparent background), and Roughen Edges. Animate the choke amount down to 0 over time, and play around with Roughen Edges to give it a more organic feel.

The next step could be adding some smoke. Smoke is a tough effect to create digitally, but I’ve had some decent results playing around with Fractal Noise, using the Whispy Smoke setting, and applying CC Vector Blur to it – and playing around with masks.

Well, that could be a start.

September 19, 2005 at 8:40 pm in reply to: Field-based video to the web

I would just output one with fields, and another with fields set to ‘none’ in the output settings.

It generally looks good enough, especially since you’re going to be compressing for web anyway.

If you’re very paranoid about losing vertical resolution, take your rendered interlaced clip and use Magic Bullet or Twixtor to de-interlace it.

September 19, 2005 at 6:42 pm in reply to: Decklink Preview with After Effects and HD

You can get an SD preview out of the Decklink Extreme. So your HD comps will be software-downconverted – but it looks pretty good.

You won’t get audio out of the Decklink during RAM preview, since AE is looking for a Windows Audio Device, which unfortunately isn’t supported by the BMD drivers.

    Fractal Noise, no?”

Yes, Fractal Noise actually IS Noise Turbulent, after Cult Effects was bought by Adobe.

I think it’s included in the Pro version only though… which is not what the original poster is using.

September 17, 2005 at 9:45 pm in reply to: XL H1

Hmmmm… yes, but getting DVCProHD out of the HVX200 isn’t the big deal I guess. It’s convienient to bypass the P2 cards in some occasions, but the real thing for me would be to have a portable disk-based device that would capture HD-SDI into a compressed format, so you could take for instance the XL H1’s digital uncompressed output and record to a decent looking compressed format.
