I’m not near my Mac, but two ideas off the top of my head:
1: does a shift fields filter make any difference?
2: how about a slightly different setting for the effect (shouldn’t be necessary, but if it works…)

Could it be that you are switching languages -and thus keyboard layouts- without knowing it? That would explain the cmd+z not working. Check your system preferences; if the shortcut for changing the language (I’m not in front of a Mac, so I can’t check where to find it) is a combination you use in FCP, OSX picks it up before FCP does…

Thanks a lot Dave, that’s what I thought/feared. I really need to get into cinema tools, even if this is the first time I needed it after three years of FCP.
Any thoughts on the gamma shift? I just put the tga’s on a prores timeline and saw nothing suspicious, but then I got complaints from the broadcaster saying the image was dull and desaturated compared to last year’s spot. Remember, I never saw the original spot, except on Vimeo, and the whole thing had a kind of bleach bypass/fluorescent lights kind of look.

It depends on what you mean by visual differences. Will there be a difference in image quality? Maybe some marginal differences, depending on the source material and what you do with it in terms of effects etc. But it’s not like FCP or Avid or Vegas has better or worse video quality.
Will you make different edits, making your video’s look different? Well of course you will. Any tool will eventually have some effect on the final result. Is there a better or worse app for video editing? Of course not, these days the differences aren’t that big.
By editing actions, I presume you mean working with the interface. Any program has it’s own interface and it’s own logic, so yes there are substantial differences in how you perform the same tasks. If you’re just starting out, you’re lucky, because you get to learn from scratch. I’m switching from FCP to Vegas and most of my frustrations are with old habits, not with the new program.
I just hope you’re not used to editing in FCP and have a job coming up with Vegas next week. If so, I suggest you download the trial of Vegas, order a study book (Douglas Spotted Eagle wrote a fine one) and prepare for some short nights.

I wouldn’t worry about the list. It’s just a bunch of references, they don’t do anything while you’re editing. You can delete it if you want, it’s nothing to do with the timeline, it’s just a list of what you last opened in the trimmer.

What I did when learning the shortcuts was just copy/paste them from the help menu into word, print them and study them while waiting for the bus. And I got a set of shortcut stickers I stuck on a spare keyboard that is now my dedicated Vegas keyboard.

I’d just export an 8 bit uncompressed SD -pal or ntsc- QT and run that through compressor set to dvd 90mins high quality.
