Whenever you have problems like this, you should export an image sequence rather than a Quicktime.
That way, if it crashes you can resume the render from the last frame, rather than having to re-render an entire movie, or render the movie out in pieces.
Once you’ve exported the whole piece you can open the image sequence up in QT as a movie and export it in the codec of your choice.

That’s a great analogy! I’m in complete agreement. If he want’s the best quality, he can start with a better capture and should end with a full height DVD. It won’t be the same quality as a studio picture, but I don’t see the point of putting all that effort into NR when you capture as DV and end up as half height.
FWIW, I’ve made half height DVDs when I needed to fit around 4 hours on a disk, and it did look better with that much compression than the full height did. But at more reasonable (and typical) compression levels, the full height is waaaay better.

I think that what Rafael was trying to point out is that you’re converting a low quality analog format to a highly compressed digital format with low color sampling- DV. You’re only going to add compression artefacting to whatever other problems you already have. It would be better to capture it to an uncompressed or less compressed format like ProRes or DV50.

Why? If you have 40 objects that are going to do the same thing, you should place them all in one layer & keyframe that layer. It will apply to all the items inside that layer. You can then make additional keyframes on individual items inside that layer.

It would be nice if you posted your FCP sequence & Motion project settings. Without that info, it’s impossible to be of any help to you.
If you’re working with interlaced video, you absolutely need to view it on an interlaced monitor. Otherwise, it’s very possible that what you think is a horrible mistake may in fact be correct & quite beautiful. And it’s not unusual for people to accidentally make extremely horrible looking interlaced video because it looked good on their computer screen.

It sounds like FCP is having trouble finding the movie data in that file.
Either the file has been moved from it’s original location, or it’s corrupt. Make sure that it’s where it needs to be. If you’re working with the Red generated proxies, your .r3d file needs to be in the same folder as the proxies. If it’s corrupt, you will need to copy it back from your backup archive.

If your original footage is interlaced, you need to render out of AE as interlaced in the same field order as your footage. What format is the original?

You have 2 things to check.
1- do your Motion project settings match your timeline settings?
2- Have you rendered your Motion project in your FCP timeline?
BTW, what are your settings? If your FCP project is DV or HDV, you’re not going to get very good results.

Then fail them. Seriously. If they can’t deliver to spec, They haven’t completed the assignment. And if they can’t learn to work with fundamental format standards, then they don’t deserve a passing grade for video or film making.
It’s like spelling and punctuation. If they submitted a term paper that was brilliant but unreadable due to spelling and punctuation errors they would fail. That was how it worked at the college I went to.
