Digital Film Tree’s ZMatte is pretty good. I also like Conduit, from DV Garage. It includes 2 or 3 keyers, but it’s much more than that.
Far and away, though, my favorite for keying is using Keylight in Shake.

You can open multiple Motion projects, each it’s own timeline. You can copy & paste between the projects (try that in AE!).

Lean about groups, or you will never be able to do anything interesting in Motion. If you understand precomposing in AE, you will understand groups. Motion’s grouping is much more elegant, refined, straightforward & powerful than AE’s precomposing.

I don’t think you understand John’s post. If you check the anamorphic box for a clip in the FCP browser, then drop it into a 4×3 sequence, it should be automatically letterboxed for you, without having to set the distort tab to -33.33.

That’s what we’ve been using as well. Bare SATA drives are now (way) less than $100 for a terabyte. We typically fit all the original sources, project files & shooting files for a feature length DI on a pair of 1TB drives.

If it’s your video made for your purposes, I’d say that you should.
If it’s a client’s video, then you need to sell them on the idea of you making an intro for them for just this purpose.
Such intros are very commonplace. We see them in the movies, we see them on the web. You should be able to bill at least a day’s worth of work, if the concept is already well formed and not too complicated. Several day’s worth is more likely.

You know, this could really be anything, starting with how the video was shot and ending with how it’s finished and layed off to tape. It’s most likely a combination of small things that add up.
Was the video shot properly? Did the production crew use a waveform and vectorscope on set to check the video signal? A properly calibrated production monitor? Did they at least use a light meter?
Were you monitoring on a properly calibrated production monitor while you were editing? If so, you should have caught the quality problems early.
What format was the video shot in? What format was it cut in, and how was it captured into FCP?
How was it finished? Did the online editor do any color correction? How did it get to Beta?

These are still pictures? Why would you time remap them? If you need to slow or speed up the motion you’re adding, you do that with keyframes.

It’s 2009. IMO, buying any piece of gear that’s only SD is a waste of money. Especially if you’re already working in HD.
For around $500 or $600, you could buy a used Sony PVM-14L5, which is an HD CRT monitor with analog component inputs. It’s fully compatible with HD analog outputs from capture cards like the AJA Kona series, the Black Magic Decklink series and the Matrox MXO series.

To do this with the Kona, you need to play it out through the card to another video device, typically a deck. Some people play it out to another computer with another capture card.
