[ben kaplan] “but isn’t this more of a problem with “legacy formats” like DVCPROHD tape than it is with the color grading system being used?”
Most of the current color grading systems are file based, and should be able to handle a QT or image sequence that’s 23.976fps.
The problem is in using tape to tape systems with material that is outside of the SMPTE/broadcast specs.
It’s not a flaw in the tape to tape system, and it’s not a flaw in the non-broadcast format, it’s a flaw in trying to get the two of them to work together in that way without compromising one or the other.

[Arnie Schlissel] “Once, I literally lined the floor of the room I was cutting in with all of the tapes to online a series of sales conference videos. Must have been over 50 betas lined up & grouped by tape number.”
While fondly reminiscing about this, I had an idea.
Right click the sequence you’re going to online and select Batch Capture. FCP will present a menu of the tapes you need to capture from. Make a screen grab of this list, print it, give it to the assistant & send them off to the vault.

July 17, 2009 at 2:43 am in reply to: syncing drop frame video w/non-drop frame audio?[Jeff Schmidt] “I presume that the problem is a DF vs NDF issue, but I’m not entirely sure.”
DF vs NDF should have nothing to do with this, because 1) all the TC does is count frames, and the difference between DF vs NDF is how they’re counted and 2) there are no frames in audio files, anyway.
Most likely this is a sample rate issue. Your audio should have been recorded at a sample rate of 48kHz. Check to see that it wasn’t actually recorded at either 44.1 or 48.048.
That last one is often used on film shoots to accommodate the pulldown from 24fps to 23.976 (23.98 to us FCP folk), and is sometimes interpreted as 48k, which would automatically slow it down the correct amount to compensate for the film to video slowdown.

[Shane Ross] “I don’t get it. I was an assistant editor, and a tape vault manager…maybe that’s why this all makes friggin sense and is logical.”
Assistant? Tape vault? What are these mythical things you speak of??
Admittedly, I’ve only briefly worked as an assistant, mainly logging and digitizing, never the guy running to the “vault”. In my experience, the “vault” is either a shelf in the edit room (euphemistically, if not jokingly referred to as a “suite”, even if it’s not really a separate room), or a cardboard box that is only lifted with extreme caution, lest the bottom (and all the tapes therein) should fall out.
Ahh, the sexy, sexy world of indie film and low budget industrials!

[Shane Ross] “I WISH that FCP enabled you to make a pull list”
FCP can create a pull list. Select a sequence, choose File>Export>EDL, choose CMX3600 for the format, choose “Source” for the sort order. This will create a “C-mode” or pull list. Choosing “Program” for your sort order will create an A-mode list.
The above assumes that you’ve logged your footage with proper reel numbers and digitized it with correct timecode using some form of deck control. If you don’t have reel numbers (or if they all seem to be reel 001), If you don’t have correct timecode (those of you who capture using “Capture Now listen up), then the above is for another film and you should dissregard.

[Shane Ross] “.the Kona 2 has Component out too, doesn’t it?”
Mine does! If you have the break out box, you go from the component out on the box to your TV, if you don’t have the box, the card comes with a break out cable that includes component connections. Either way, you’ll need a cable with male BNC connectors to plug into the card to male RCA connectors for you TV.

I’ve used FCP to edit in 3D, it’s not that easy. What we’ve done is to set up 2 monitors and stereo projectors with a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go to create side by side edits. the edits are then sent to Motion or AE for final compositing.
We’re planning on trying out the 2 new plugins from Cineform and Noise Industries to see if they improve our workflow.
If you’re in NY, you can swing by our shop and see how we do it. Email me off list at arniepix @ arniepix (dot) com.

[Mark Alexander] “aren’t willing to ante up the increased cost of HD production.”
what increased cost? You can edit DVCPro HD, HDV, XDCam all off of firewire drives. Good quality cameras can be had for between $5k and $10k. HD capture cards start at $1k. The cost of working with uncompressed HD now is less than the cost of working with uncompressed SD was just 5 or 6 years ago.

I don’t really understand your post- I’m guessing that English is not your first language.
You need to mount the original XDCam disks or your backups of them if you need to re-capture the material. If you’ve already erased these, then you will not be able to re-capture. Just like if you had erased your master tapes before your online session.

[Tommy Martiniere] “Why should I not repost? I am asking someone for help and they asked some questions. I appreciate the answers from everyone.”
Well, for one, I will never respond to you ever again. I know that you’re crushed, but tough luck. I wouldn’t know which post to respond to, and since I don’t really have the time, I’d rather let you twist in the wind than have to choose which of your postings to respond to.
I asked you a series of questions in your first post. Now I don’t think I need to see if you even bothered to answer, because you were obviously too impatient to actually go through the process of trouble shooting out why your show looks crappy on TV. You seem to be expecting someone to tell you “click your mouse here, and it will all look like David Lean”. If you can’t be bothered, why should I?
[Tommy Martiniere] “As for you… get a life and find someone else to bother!”
No thank you. I already have a life. Quite enjoyable, by the way. Hot girlfriend, nice apartment… And the shows I finish look terrific!
Very winning attitude, BTW. Guaranteed to keep me from ever bothering you again. Especially when I can tell you that one click answer- I’ll just cackle & click the button to skip over to the next thread!
