  • converting 16:9 to 4:3 letterbox Edge flicker

    Hello
i have a problem with converting 16:9 footage to 4:3 letter box i get edge flicker on my broadcast monitor.

here is what i am doing in detail.
The footage i have is shot in 16:9 on a Digibeta DVW-970 then edited on a sony linear editing system in 4:3.
what I am asked to do is to squeeze the picture to correct the Aspect ratio.
I captured the Material in Blackmagic Pal-10bit
put the footage in to the timeline and distort it in to -33.33
the result is as desired except that the footage is flickering at the top and bottom edges only on my preview monitor (Sony BVM-2010P ColorMonitor (PAL).
I tried cropping the edges but i still get the same problem.
    What should i do.
    Thanks in advance…

When you say you’re editing in 4×3 with your Sony edit system are you seeing an anamorphically squeezed image on your monitor? If so, when you capture that in FCP it should remain anamorphic. When you play it, with the Sequence Setting for anamorphic checked, it should be 16×9 on your monitor. You should also check in the Browser that the anamorphic field (scroll right) is checked. You don’t say what the final output should be. But, usually, the player will adjust the image to 16×9 or 4×3 with letterbox automatically.

    Dear John
thanks for the reply the footage on the digibeta is stretched in 4:3 not in the right aspect ratio,,, the result should be letterbox 4:3 i.e i need to distort it to -33.33
    hope that explains more
    thanks

I don’t think you understand John’s post. If you check the anamorphic box for a clip in the FCP browser, then drop it into a 4×3 sequence, it should be automatically letterboxed for you, without having to set the distort tab to -33.33.
