Does the PNG have a separate alpha channel? Did you try to invert that?

    [Jared Eaton] “quicktime .mov file”

That tells us nothing. What codec? what frame rate? What raster size? You know, some actual information for the people trying to help you.

You should be able to do all of this with one pass through Compressor. Your Compressor manual will explain the various parts.

You will need to use the Frame and Geometry tabs to change the frame rate and the size. You want to set the speed Frame tab to make the 24p frames play at 25p.

I’m not near my FCP system right now, so I can’t be more specific, but the Compressor manual explains all of this.

The best plugins are the ones that do what you need or make your regular work faster and easier. The best prices are whatever the plugin maker charges for whatever reason they choose to set the price.

IOW, if there are 2 “cartoon look” plugins, one that costs $50 and looks like poo and is hard to use, another that costs $1500 and looks great and is easy to use, the top one at the best price is the $1500 one.

February 21, 2010 at 3:45 pm in reply to: print to tape (video)

[Roberto A Zavala] “the tv station im sending the vid to wants it on a mini dv.”

[Roberto A Zavala] “the footage i have it 1080p at 29.97, well, the sequence setting is 1080i”

You cannot send 1080i over firewire to a 480i mini DV camera or deck. This is not a limitation of FCP, it’s a limitation of the DV device.

You need to either downconvert the video to DV standard def first, or you need to take it to a post house that can lay it off to tape for you.

February 20, 2010 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Not just another Public Service Announcement

Creativity starts in preproduction, or, really, with the pitch meeting.

If the director & DP show up on the day of the shoot & their creative vision can only deliver WS, MS, CU of a talking head, then I’d wonder what they expect to happen in the edit. Do they expect you to magically find a camera angle that they didn’t shoot? To use the dolly or steadicam shot that they didn’t create?

IOW, this is a kind of “garbage in, garbage out” scenario. The failure of the director & DP to have a more creative vision on set is the first problem with making dull PSAs. They’ve left you with the onerous task of building exciting graphics or finding exciting music to hide their own lack of vision.

    [Greg Barringer] “I’m using FCP7.”

The title safety guides in FCP 7 already have 4:3 markers in 16:9 canvas and viewer windows.

What is your final deliverable? It’s best to tailor your shoot to that, rather than tailoring the entire shoot to the Flip cam.

Make your life easy and pleasant by transcoding both to a common codec like ProRes.

February 18, 2010 at 2:32 pm in reply to: Calibrating monitor

You cannot calibrate this monitor to accurately display colors for broadcast use. For that you really need to use a video capture card and a monitor that’s made specifically for this purpose.
