16:9 sequence, 4:3 safe area guides lines
I did a search with no luck. The sequence is 16:9, 720P. I’ll burn both 16:9 BD and cropped 4:3 DVD. I have that part working very well.
Is there a way to show the 4:3 safe area in the Canvas? Similar to using guide lines in Photoshop? It would make the placement of media easier for the cropped 4:3 version. Sometimes things are cut off in the 4:3 version that I’d like to show like still photographs. I’m using FCP7.

Might be just what you need – it’s free and I’ll bet you could get it to be setup for what you need.
The same site offers this too: https://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/dh_widesafe Not free, but is exactly what you’re looking for. Seems to me you could create a photoshop graghic that would also work, but there’s not one of these built into FCP.

You gave me an idea. In Photoshop I made two vertical red lines and saved it as a layered .psd file. In Motion I showed just the layer with the lines and imported it into FCP. I have it on the top video track and it’s working. I’ll delete it when the layout is complete.
I tried importing the .psd file into FCP but the background was white even though the background was set to transparent. I’m not sure how a Motion file will affect the resources of the computer but I’ll delete the track before I start much editing.

The title safety guides in FCP 7 already have 4:3 markers in 16:9 canvas and viewer windows.
