Typically you would crush out the noise by lowering the blacks all the way to zero.

    A G5? With PCI-X? Look for a used Kona 2. The LHe won’t work in a PCI-X slot.

I would just make a matte in Photoshop.

get the exact specification from the distributor or network, then hire an online editor to do this for you. It will be well worth the money.

    February 17, 2010 at 5:41 am in reply to: 720p 23.98

[John DiCarlo] “The DVCPRO HD deck can be set to 720p 23.98 and you can set the Kona output to match but and it’s a big BUT, you cannot record to tape at that frequency.”

That would be very hard to do since there is, officially, no such thing as 720P 23.98. Nor is there (officially) a 30P or 25P in 720. According to SMPTE, etc, 720P only exists at 59.94P and 50P, so DVCPro HD decks, along with HDCam SR and D5 decks, can only record 720P at 59.94P and 50P.

If you set your FCP output to 720P 59.94 you will be able to play out your 23.98 timeline to your monitor and your deck with no problems. Your Kona card will simply add duplicate frames to make 2-3 pulldown. This is the native format for 720P, some of us call it “24 over 60”.

BTW, this is the 3rd or 4th time this exact problem has come up on this forum in the last couple of weeks.

[Frederik Ailliet] “I think they just want…”

    You think or you know?

When I was in college, we were taught to go back to the “primary” source- in this case, your teacher.

And I can tell you from my experience in post that not finding out in advance from the people who expect it tends to be an expensive mistake.

February 16, 2010 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Using Quicktime Conversion – WMV Output Errors

[Mark Fanjoy] “Looks like it is the Flip4Mac free version limiting my output.”

There is no “free” version, there’s only a free demo for the paid versions.

[Mark Fanjoy] “Strange that I’ve got to purchase a third party software to fulfill a codec option listed in the FC menu. But maybe that option is only there because I HAVE Flip4Mac installed.”

Correct. WMV becomes an option only after Fip4Mac is installed.

The first thing I usually try is Compressor. I’ve also had some success with Shake and many people have had success with Nattress Standards Converter.

February 16, 2010 at 4:16 am in reply to: Duplicate timecode from firestore?

you can modify the TC of these clips to use them in the multiclip sequence. The downside to this is you may have problems if you need to recapture from your Firestore backup.

Look under the “Modify” menu if you want to change the TC. You’ll have an option to modify the original or auxiliary TC.
