FWIW, most post professionals call that “center punch” or “center extract”. That’s usually an option on most downconvert systems.

You might be able to use this camera with FCP 6, but you really can’t expect to use the newest tapeless formats on a Mac that’s 5 or more years old. The world of digital video is simply moving too fast for that.

Same thing. You you use the alpha as a track matte for the fill.

Photo JPEG at 75% is very good, very compact and very cross platform. It’s used for a lot of stock footage by the likes of Corbis, Getty, Artbeats, et al.

Look up “track matte alpha” in the online manual under the Help menu.

February 27, 2010 at 3:48 pm in reply to: Is this even possible?

[Scott Douglas] “Is there anyway possible for him to go straight Firewire to an HDCam deck and get it to output properly?”

No. He needs to use some sort of capture card. On a MBP, he needs something that will connect Via firewire or Express Card. He can use an Io HD or Io Express, or he can use a Matrox MXO2, or mabye a MOTU V4HD or HDX.

But by the time he’s bought a capture device and rented a deck, his closest dub house or post facility could have laid it off to tape (including stock) 3 or 4 times.

Take it to a dub house or post house. Most shops with a digiBeta should be able to downconvert directly from an uncompressed or ProRes export from your FCP timeline.

Who is doing the finishing? They will have their own preference. And what are you finishing to? That will effect your choices, as well.

Since you shot on film the best option for you would be to match back to your camera negative and telecine that at 1080 24P to finish in HD or scan at 2k to finish in film.

You would then do your titles, effects and color grade at 1080 or 2k.

If you telecine to 1080 you have the option to preserve the 1.85 aspect ratio with a letterbox, or to clip off the left & right edges to fill the 16×9 frame.
