I’m thinking that’s at least part of your problem. There is certainly a difference between RGB an any YPbPr color space. I think I heard someplace (AJA tech support, perhaps?) that there should be a noticeable gamma shift between the SMPTE and Betacam versions of YPbPr, as well.
I know you said the external scopes were calibrated. Were the video monitors?

It’s a shame. I thought that Compressor 1.x had the worst graphic interface possible, but did a pretty good job of mpeg2 encoding. 2.x has a pretty good interface, but is petty much useless for mpeg2. Such irony- go figure!

If you call a major vendor like B&H in New York, they can give you an ‘educated guess’ as to how long a wait you can expect.

Yes, it does. Not spectacular, but not bad, and certainly convenient.
Avoid any kind of thin font, especially script, calligraphy or most of the ‘handwriting’ type fonts.

I was always happy with Compressor 1.x, but 2.x has some serious issues with mpeg2 encoding.
Most of the software encoders on the Mac side have free demo versions. Download them & run a 5 or 10 minute test movie through them. Make sure that you have lots of dissolves, fast motion, still scenes, heavy texture, etc to give them a real workout. The most expensive software encoder for Mac is maybe $500-600. FWIW, I’ve settled on MegaPegHD from Digigami.
For hardware encoders you may have to visit a vendor who can build you a turnkey system (or have them pay a sales call?). Digital Rapids, Sonic & Media Press (Wired Inc.) jump off the top of my head, but you might want to do a quick search on Google to see who I’ve left out.
BTW, I’ve heard that Procoder & Cinema Craft are both very good on the PC side. But I don’t actually own a PC, so I’ve never tried either.

Also, if you have a transition on one or both ends of that clip, you might get that type of error. You can remove the tranny, apply the speed change & then add a new tranny.

Media 100, like Avid, Quantel, Canopus & AutoDesk, is a combo of hardware & software that are designed around each other. All of them cost anything from truckloads to boxcar loads more than FCP. FCP is software only, and most of the 3rd party (as in “Apple didn’t make it”) hardware that’s certified for FCP is also designed to work on other platforms.
IOW, FCP has less integration with 3rd party hardware designed to work with both FCP and other platforms than much more expensive turnkey solutions that are designed from the ground up as integrated hardware/software combos.
