[Rennie Klymyk] “Color perception is something that can be learned I believe.”

I would agree to that, but there are also technical standards. And in the case of transferring to film, it can be a total crap shoot if you’re not properly set up to match the film recorder & chemistry at the lab.

Walter, if I recall, you had a colorist come in to train you on Final Touch. Plus your other experience as an editor doing broadcast work. I’d count that for something.

[Michael Nichols] “How is this dupe detection if it happened in a new project??”

Check the timeline settings in your preferences. That would set up the default timeline settings for any new sequence you make.

[walter biscardi] “Easy to do in Color.”

Easy for a “colorist” to do in Color! Not so easy if someone has never used Color, or has no experience or training as a colorist!

Honestly, if you’re really looking to color grade a feature for broadcast or theatrical output, you would be best off taking it to a post house or lab that is properly equipped & staffed for this. There’s a lot of technical & aesthetic know-how, which is impossible to impart in a couple of forum postings. And you need monitors & scopes that are properly calibrated to match your final output.

September 26, 2008 at 12:13 am in reply to: Mixed Frame Rate resolution bugs

[Dan Powers] “Second. Final cut takes clips that are 23.98. After Effects will render at 23.98 and FCP chokes on it. You have to render out of AE at 23.976 not 23.98.”

What FCP calls 23.98 is actually 23.976. If you render out of AE at 23.98, you’re not really rendering at the same frame rate that FCP uses. Nobody knows why some apps, like FCP, label this frame rate 23.98 while other apps label it 23.976. And, to be accurate, it’s really more like 23.976023976…

September 25, 2008 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Setting up 5.1 surround to monitor in FCP

FCP does not currently support 5.1 monitoring. You might be able to fake it if your capture card has 6 or more output channels, and you can route them through a mixer that has 6 or more output channels.

If that’s the case, you would patch the tracks in your FCP timeline to the appropriate outputs on your capture card, through the appropriate D to A into the mixer, and then assign those channels to the appropriate speakers.

If it sounds messy, well, it is… You will not be able to pan audio from one output channel to another without jumping through some serious, multi-track cross-fading hoops.

It sounds like you have the dupe detection turned on. You turn this off someplace in your sequence settings.

September 23, 2008 at 6:55 pm in reply to: LEASE and/or PURCHASE

[walter biscardi] “B&H is the largest dealer in the U.S., but they’re not that great at support after the sale.”

I used to work at B&H, and I’d have to agree with Walter on their after market support. They’re simply not set up to provide any.

Also, B&H does not do any direct leasing, but they will work with your leasing company to make the sale, and can even refer you to a leasing company.

In NYC, you could also try Tekserve. I think they’re an Apple VAR.
