Premier Pro’s new Voice Recognition- Killer!
Posted by Richard Dee on September 24, 2008 at 10:00 amThough I saw a thread here about Premier Pro’s new features, no one mentioned voice recognition.
I think the ability for the NLE to be able to index and search via spoken content is simply stunning. Whether it works well is another story, but they claim 95% accuracy with distinct speech. It makes transcripts as well.
I’m sorry but this is the most exciting feature in an NLE i’ve heard about since real time.
I cut quite a bit of interview based material, and I think this would end up being an invaluable aide. No, I’m not dropping FCP for Premier, but I am really hoping Apple realizes this is a major innovation, as far as being supported directly in an NLE.
If I had to choose between background rendering (a feature we’ve all been longing for) and VR, I think I’d choose VR. Might be great for feature film editors as well.
Any thoughts, flames, expletives?

that’s the big key. Does it actually work or is it just like the BluRay claim in Encore? that didn’t turn out so accurate on our end.

September 24, 2008 at 1:27 pmHey… its a start in the right direction.
Could you imagine the possibilities if this were to work decently well. Closed Captioning would be a synch to do… Transcripts would be almost instantly created. WOW! Technology is absolutely amazing.
And the best is yet to come…

“The transcripts part would be enough for me to purchase it just for that if it works.

September 24, 2008 at 1:44 pmI won’t elaborate, but DRW will, but so far he says it’s got a long way to go.
Have a wonderful day.

September 24, 2008 at 1:46 pmI’ve read a few reviews–voice recognition seems to be about 50% accurate–in others, a little better–but I haven’t seen any review that claims the actual 95%. The big question is, does it get close enough to make correcting the mistakes faster than transcribing it from scratch? If not, it’s a wash.
Premiere has certainly raised the stakes for FCP, Avid, et. al. if this release is stable and lives up to the hype. I think the stability factor will be key, though. Pack all the features into a program you want, but if the editor can’t trust it he won’t use it.
Michael.

Walter,
all I can say is that I was shown a live demo of a shoot with 2 people in a noisier environment than I would have ever allowed
The software was smart enough to actually determine that there were 2 speakers and to correctly covert over 95% of the conversation, with most of the errors on technical terms or mumbling by one speaker.Add that to the “clip notes” function and adobe has really made a mark with the new version of premier,

Michael has it exactly right. There’s a “break even” point for accuracy, which for each user is a little different, but if accuracy is below that number, automatic transcription become more trouble than its worth.
In my trial of the beta version of Speech Search, it was less than valuable for my work.

Gary,
I tried the beta version of Speech Search using pristine audio from one of my own one on one interviews, with zero background noise and an interviewee with a good voice and no accent. Let me just say that the results were not what I’d hoped for, and not what I’d been led to expect. I was unable to make use of the results, and I sent that interview and five others out for professional transcription later that day, incurring a rather large bill, which I was happy to pay. That should tell you something…
Meanwhile, I’ll be testing the release version of Speech Search very soon and will report back on this forum as soon as I do.

Yes, I mentioned my experience to Chris right away after testing the beta version. I’m hoping the release version is a much better. I’ll know very soon.

Walter,
I compeletely agree. In fact, I told the folks at Adobe that, if Speech Searc worked as claimed, hoards of documentary filmmakers would pay more for that feature alone than Adobe were charging for the entire suite of apps. I still believe that…
