I take it that you meant fiber channel? You don’t need fiber anymore. For a lot less you can now buy or build a SATA array that will be fast enough to do uncompressed 1080 in RAID 5.
If you want to stay with firewire for the near term, then a FW800 drive should be fast enough for 8 bit uncompressed SD, and more than fast enough for DVCPro HD.
I’m assuming that you’re likely to replace your G5 in the next 12 months, so you may not want to pour a lot of money into that machine unless you have the gigs to pay for it. FW drives or a SATA array will help you stretch your $$ until then. And you can probably use a SATA array with the Mac Pro that replaces the G5.

Mac OSX 10.5.5 “Your best bet for this machine will be a used Kona 2. You can often find them on eBay for $400-500. The K2 will do up and down converts very well, and can add 2:3 pulldown on output.
For the laptops, take a look at either the Aja Io HD or the Matrox MXO2. The IoHD can up, down & cross convert.

You cannot download an upgrade from 5.x to 6.x. You need to purchase that upgrade in a box. A fairly large & heavy box, BTW.
If there’s an Apple store or a large computer or photo/video store near you, you should be able to walk in, drop some money on the counter & walk right out with it.

If he sends you a video DVD, it will no longer be HD. I’m often amazed at how many “filmmakers” don’t understand this.
If he sends you a DVD-ROM, then he can use whatever format he wants at whatever resolution he wants, so long as he can get it to fit on the DVD.

It sounds like you rendered out of AE with fields. the only way to fix this is to re-render without fields.

That’s right. That’s why I recommend an external enclosure. Areca does make other cards in the 11xx series that do have internal connectors, though.

About your only reliable option for RAID 5 on PCI-X is from Areca. they make 2 cards with external connectors, the 1110 will support up to 4 drives, the 1120 will support 8:

Who gave you the tape? They should be able to tell you exactly what format it was shot in. If they cannot, then they should be able to get that information from whoever shot the tape.
If that person doesn’t know, then either return the job with a nice apology, or charge by the hour, including any time spent on the phone with these people and any time spend dinking around with any and all available settings until you determine that it doesn’t work.

Try this:
Make a new sequence. Open the 1st nest in the “sequence from hell” (SFH). Select all, copy, past in new sequence. Wash, rinse, repeat.Better still, have the offending editor who created the SFH do this.
