seems like you’ve got the wrong import settings… all things imported from AE or PS should be interpreted as RGB, not 601.
and even then, a slight shift in chroma/luma is inevitable since you are converting the color space.
it also seems to me that there is something wrong in your fields settings. You need to turn on field rendering in AE and set it to lower (for NTSC). Then make sure you import settings match… RGB color, 601 non-square aspect ratio, lower field.
I’ve never had an issue with clips that are already online having speed effects issue.
Once the clips go off-line EVERY speed effected clip will be completely screwed up. Not sure if this is addressed in FCP 5 but I sure hope so. I had a 3 hour project last year which probably had about 50% of the shots speed effected (car show) and when I redig’d the project, every single speed effected clip ran 200% in reverse. Took over a week to fix all the speed clips.
Since v4, there was lots of issues with speed change. 4.5 has prety much corrected it, but I still see it from time to time. I’m not sure it has to do with the speed change effect itself… the bug seems to be related with the way FCP constructs the timeline. For example, problematic clips would also misbhave with motion blur effect. It seems that at some point, FCP can loose track of the clip’s timecode.
I whish they fixed those bugs, because otherwise the new “workgroup editing” will be buggy as hell. There’s some hope… (quote from apple) “Improved Media Management Tools provide support for reconnecting and managing file across large Xsan environments, budgeting your real-time effects according to available Xsan bandwidth.”
I whish that “Improved Media Management Tools” means they reworked the core of the MM and cleaned the bugs out.

> Do I need to upgrade to QT Pro in order to use the export options in FCP 4.5’s menus, which I know rely on QuickTime? Or is this just for the QuickTime Pro application itself?
It’s just for the player application. All export features will be available to FCP.

the subframe audio keyframing was already there. I don’t know if it is 1/100th, but it is already pretty precise…

+ workgroup editing? Is it the end of Avid…?
We’ll have to see if they tweaked as much under the hood. The new scaler is a good sign.

Change your sequence settings to Anmation (and why not set it to square pixel while there) and then export. Use “Export->Quicktime Movie”. Do NOT use “Using Quicktime conversion”.
Sorenson 3 (the full version) is usually the best codec for sharp graphics. But WMV 9 will playback easier on a PC.

and another thing… I noted your are using the IO’s video output and the G5’s audio output. In this configuration, there will be a few frames lag on the video, but not on the audio.
So either you ignore audio/video sync on the video monitor, or you buy a mixer and use the IO’s XLR or TRS audio out.

It looks very clean if the TL’s been rendered, but ‘interlaced’ when playing unrendered, either safeRT or unlimited RT.
Which “Playback Quality” have you selected in that same menu? You need to set it to Full to see the full quality preview.
As Kevin noted, are you really using a RGB (not YUV) monitor? This is fine if you’re dealing with computer generated graphics only, but you should arrange your setup to work in YUV if you’re working with camera footage or exporting to video.
